Before you order those rims you might want to check availibility on those
Silent Armors. Last thing I heard was that they hadn't started production on
that tire yet.
As of this week they are in production and are filling backorders, or so I'm told by customer service and local GY service store. At any rate the 18's will give me more options ;-) I'll let you know how I make out.

Cheers

Here is another option for 18 inch rim owners. I had the Toyo Open Country A/T
in the 285/60 size installed last week. These are great tires! Tread pattern is quite
similar to the Nittos and no rubbing. Took them out to Borrego this weekend and beat
up on them a little bit and thought they performed quite well. As far as the spare goes,
no problem either, I did not have to air it down. Diameter on website says 31.48 but
reallistically they are 31.3. When I went to mount the spare underneath I was
getting ready for a fight, but to my surprise a shove here and there between ratcheting up, it slid into place.

Those do look decent for someone wanting something between a road tire and the Nitto's. The tread pattern is similar, but the side lugs are not quite as aggressive

Definitely a good tire, I have a friend with these on his Disco II, and he had a great trek through heavy mud in Colorado with Bill Burke and they performed very well. There are some guys in the UK that have recently started running with these also, and they seem to like them.

My only comment is that they are a little small at 255/60R18 (30" dia. verses 31.5" with the 285/60/18 Nittos)

Thanks nwoods for the info and I see your point on the dia..... I guess I'm just being stubborn on keeping close to the 30" dia on the 19" HP's so I can use one of them as a full size spare :) or maybe I'm doing the P in the wind thing ? LOL

Gosh you know, I didn't look if they had 19" available?

Here's another option that shows promise .... very agressive looking tire IMO

60K warranty, 112H speed rated, XL load rated.
Opinions vs silent armor or others ?
Second the good opinions of this tire. I have some Discovery clients in them and they are very satisfied. The NA manager for General tells me that 255/60r18 won't be out until Junish. Whenever it really comes out, I will definitely be pushing these.

There is a plus side to the 255/60R18 in that it is the same diameter as the stock 19" tires (255/55R19). So when I use my 18" set I only need 4 because my 19" spare is the same size. This makes it much cheaper (and easier) to keep switching from my 19" highway set to my 18" off-road set.

I guess I wouldn't have to be so cheap if I could just find one more 18" wheel.

Sorry nwoods, in rereading my post I see it wasn't clear that I am replacing the OEM 19" rims with LR 5 spoke 18" 8J rims :), because I'm begining to believe that serious on/off road tires in 19" are a pipe dream (at least in the USA) and I'm thinking that by using one of my stock HP 19's 30" dia as a spare (have stupid donut now) I can save ~$500 to use towards other things like sliders etc for LRNR in August ;-)

Davez26...you are a real bundle of joy...NOT :) unfortunately I don't think I can hold out till June or so.... I have already replaced 2 of my 19"HP's and the others are getting close so need to decide soon ....oh well just my luck :-(.

Thanks for the input guys,
John
