Couldn't the stand-offs help you "pivot" around a tree? I agree the options with the stand-offs would be better in wooded areas.

This is true, but it can also hang you up in rocky narrow situations. I have the option 2
sliders and wish they had the slims when I was in the market, I would have
gone for those in a heartbeat.

I'm not sure I agree. It is my opinion that the point of the the Option 3's is to slide over items a bit better, due to the solid plating. It would not benefit someone standing on top of the tube, unless perhaps you are wearing 3" heals, and position your foot just so.

The choice between the various configurations has more to do with the type of terrain you find yourself in most often. Those in wooded areas tend to like the Option 2 or 3's for the hefty standoff's. Those in abundantly rocky areas prefer the Opt2Slims, or even the Option 1's like what I am using, for maximum side height clearance. Snow & Mud more your style? In those conditions, some like the Option 3's, as they sort help the truck glide across :)

Personally, I think the Opt 2 Slims is the most versatile combination, but then, I am rather tall and don't need the tubes to access the truck or roof.

Nathan,your answer is always appreciated,the only reason I ask those questions is because these sliders are not cheap and I always try to get "best of both worlds".I am leaning towards Opt.2 slims since tubes serve two purposes protection and anchoring points in case of pooling lr3 to one of the sides.I can't say that in NJ we have superb trails but if I go to wharton state forest , there is water and sand and mud ,in NY ,on the other hand,one could find some nice rocky trails.I just wonted to know if opt.2.slims offer enough side protection in mod and rots situations.Do we really loose that much clearance jumping from opt.1 to 2 ?

This might seem silly, but wouldn't the non-slim option offer protection against....door dings?

If nothing else, my OE sidesteps do just that! No Toyota Carolla in a parking lot will ever get me!!!

LOL, only if you were were in off road mode with 2" lifted rods :)

Most automotive doors have a curved edge to them, and stick out farther at the "belt line" than they do at the top and bottom, thus, the stand off tubes don't really help against door dings...but they work great against rocks and trees!

Nathan, are you thinking more of the rear doors (with the curve around the wheel well) or just the out-of-plane curvature of the front doors? I have tested other people's (front) doors against my OE sidesteps and they do in fact protect against would-be door dings. If the adjacent passenger car is low enough the door hits the sidestep first....even if it has a curved edge. I guess it depends on how much of a height disparity exists between the LR3 and the other car.

...by the way, my test was against a Carolla and I was in Access mode!
