Here's the root cause; it explains the bearings! This is the flat faced idler that sits behind the viscous fan pulley:

I'm now looking for:
- This idler (the bracket I think is OK)
- Bolt for the same idler
- The other idler (preventative - above the alternator)
- The pulley on the belt tensioner (has a slight nick)
- New serpentine belt
- New viscous fan pulley belt
- New viscous fan pulley (spotted a little damage on it)

Where do people shop? Lake Bluff seem quite reasonable; where possible I'd like to keep this OE. I also need to splice in a new electrical connector, does anyone know where I might find one of these (it's the connection below the thermostat by the alternator):

I've gotten some parts from landroverparamus (in NJ), and found they had some good prices.

Is the pulley on the tensioner the same as the idler pulley, or do you need to replace the entire tensioner assembly to get just the pulley?

I just put in an order with Lake Bluff; they're based in IL and were helpful when on the phone. I'm not sure about the idler on the tensioner been the same as the idler on the assembly (they're both flat pulleys); the old pulley on the assembly (the broken one) is metal while the replacement one appears to be plastic. I'll measure the diameter and report back. You can apparently get the idler pulley on the assembly (see my next post) but you can't get the pulley on the tensioner so you have to buy the whole thing (Eugh). The Parts guy told me that there are mistakes in online manuals and that Land Rover don't allow the full catalog to be published online. I'll know more once the parts arrive and will update this thread accordingly.

Here's the parts list and current pricing info (prices are rounded):

  • The broken idler (the bracket I think is OK)
    • LR035555 ($211 at Lake Bluff), this is the full assembly
    • LR010725 is the pulley ($50)
  • Bolt for the same idler
    • Not seeing this yet, not needed if we buy the bracket!
  • The other idler (preventative - above the alternator)
    • LR106769 ($48 at Lake Bluff)
  • The pulley on the belt tensioner (has a slight nick), have to buy the whole thing, grr!
    • LR071035G ($167 at British Atlantic, $145 at Lake Bluff)
  • New serpentine belt
    • LR190101 ($37 at Lake Bluff)
  • New viscous fan pulley belt
    • LR012663 ($39 at Lake Bluff)
  • New viscous fan pulley (spotted a little damage on it)
    • LR012624 ($95 at Lake Bluff)

Tensioner pulley measures 75.75mm; the idler pulley behind the viscous fan pulley is 70mm. So they're different, I'll measure the new ones when they arrive and report back.

So far not too bad... Has the water pump and front crossover been done recently? If not I would be tempted to replace those too.

Comments posted above about this, in essence, no, it's all on the immediate to do list (along with timing chains)

The new idler pulley (part# LR010725) which is situated behind the viscous fan pulley does indeed measure 70.1mm (which is the same as the original when I measure with my vernier calipers). The width is marginally less. The new pulley is made from Plastic while the old one was steel (the pulley shoulders are slightly bigger hence the width). Interestingly the new one comes with the following image that shows installation. The old bolt used to secure the pulley was damaged; I've been unable to find a replacement bolt (via my local Land Rover dealer) so secured a hardened bolt from the local hardware store; need to investigate that more closely.

As mentioned previously; when the belt broke it also damaged the coolant temperature sensor found directly below the thermostat; here are some images; for reference you can see the AC compressor behind the connector:

The damage is to both the thermostat which can be found here at FCP Euro:

Or Land Rover:

My Local Land Rover dealership wanted to sell me a new engine wiring harness for $2435.1... to replace the single connector!

In sending me this quote they did me a huge favor and copied this image:

I have been looking for this wiring connector for weeks; looking in salvage yards etc... It turns out that this part number (12A648) registers as a Ford part number and fairly quickly I found parts on eBay and O'Reilly that looked correct... Ultimately I purchased this from O'Reilly, it's expensive for what it is but they had it in stock and I need to make progress (but it fits beautifully):

The plan is to splice this in to the wiring harness! More to follow once I can get back to this; for now I believe I have the parts that I need. I plan to make the repair, validate that things are OK and then start on the crossovers, water pump, timing chains, etc... I hope that this helps other people if they ever have this issue.

So you'll put the new idler in place, put it back together with a new serpentine belt, and make sure it runs? Then you'll take it all apart again to do the cooling system refresh?
