Front Diff(s)

Eightlug, is it possible you overfilled the diffs? The rear takes 1.1L and the front 0.61L. When converted, that is less than 2 quarts. The "official" directions indicate not to fill up to the filler plug level.

Interesting write up. I contacted the local dealer's service department about purchasing the "factory" fluid through them and they specified 3 Qts total. This is where the can of worms opens. Do those fluid amounts stated in the write up look even remotely close to accurate? The rear diff fluid amount I can work with, still seems low. The reason I say that is, that to me, sounds like the main reason these diffs are failing. Just think about this for a moment....Those instructions are telling you, the entire front diff is being lubricated by a pint of gear oil??!! Can you imagine how much of that pint of fluid is being slung around by the ring gear @ 75 MPH. That leads to a dry pinion bearing and dry output shaft bearings.

That sheds a lot of light on the situation people are experiencing with whining diffs @ 20K miles. That being said, I'll stick to my rule of thumb of filling a diff to 1/3'rd up the pinion bearing. If the pinion seal does fail from being "overfilled" It'd be a lot cheaper and easier for me to replace the pinion seal than it would to eventually replace a ring/pinion assy from lack of lubrication.

If you are considering going as far as to repair seals, you might also consider bearings, and potentially ring & pinion. The bearings and Ring & Pinion are not available from LR. You can check out my generic post after finally finding a company who could supply the parts. I figure this may be a good reference for other folks beside me with Diff issues.

The best place (only place) I know of that can answer your questions is an outfit I found in S.A. I have been in touch with them, and have a stock ratio rebuilt kit enroute. I understand :: Luck8llc :: is going to be selling them in the US.

I had problems with my Diffs and found that LR does not supply bearings or ring & pinion, only reman units, etc. Although my dealer claimed to give me a repair quote, the fact was they were quoting my a replacement unit, exchange. Anyway after a ton of research I found a company who actually supplies a total kit, at least for the rear.

I got my rear locker diff rebuild kit today. I think i'm going to consider the royal purple as well when complete.

In any event, re-engineered to prevent the "whine" people complain about, and should be better than factory new when complete. I am very excited.
