Winter tire threads are all several years old, so I figured I would start a more recent discussion with a question.

I'm starting to look at a new set of winter tires. I currently have older Hakkapeliitta R2 SUV tires. I am considering the newer R5 SUV tires for next year but despite the size and loading (XL) being correct, websites do not show them as compatible for the LR4. Do you guys know why?

I'm looking at the stock size of 255/55R19.

What website implies the Nokian R5 is "not compatible"? Discount Tire doesn't complain when I select these for an LR4:

I just bought a set of new Blizzak DM-V2 for the LR4... but have not yet driven on snow or ice with them.

Michelin X-Ice was my second choice:

I have x-ice on the LR2. They are fine for road based driving outside of blizzard conditions. The Pilot Alpin 5 on the LR4 step it up a notch and I don’t shy away from inclement weather.

I also have a set of x-ice, studded for the LR4, but that strictly for freezing rain and off road conditions.

Thanks for the feedback. Amazon and Nokian itself does not list the LR4 as compatible. As for other options, I love the X-Ice on our GTI, so I'd be happy to get those if you guys have tried them on the LR4. Have always had good luck with Blizzaks too going back to 2001 with a set of WS-50's for my 190E 2.6.

Thanks again

I'm sure you guys get pretty intense snow! Nokian have studded tires as well that apparently are amazing but winters in the greater Boston area are not what they used to be and the LR4 has been invincible in non-studded Hakkas all these years. We do go to Montreal and skiing, but again, never needed studs.

I saw Goodyear also have a new tire - WeatherReady 2, the jury is out but it also looks a lot like the Cross Climate 2.

Depends om exactly what you are doing, but I am beyond pleased with Michelin Cross Climate 2.
I have heard nothing but excellent reviews for the Cross Climate tires. They are my go-to recommendation for people needing a year-round tire in an area that gets real winters.
