Hey folks,

About 10 days ago, I discovered what seems to be a small coolant leak while preparing to change the transmission fluid on my 2015 LR4 with 86k miles. After removing the gearbox heatshield to access the drain and fill plugs, I noticed a small amount of coolant that had trickled down from somewhere near the back of the driver’s side of the engine and onto the body of the transmission. However, I couldn’t trace the source of the leak any higher. Checking the coolant level to make sure what I was seeing was coolant and not something else, I found it slightly below the cold low fill line, so I topped it off with about 300ml of a 50/50 mix of JLR OEM coolant. Since then I've probably driven about 300 miles or less (mix of highway and city) and can't really tell if the coolant level is appreciably lower.

Anyways, I was kind of surprised that there's a leak given that the previous owner had a leak coming from underneath the intake about 12k miles / 2ish years ago (i.e., at 75k miles) and the water pump, oil cooler, thermostat, pipes, outlet flanges, and various gaskets were replaced. See receipt from previous owner:

So I guess my first question is whether it's abundantly obvious to any more experienced LR4 owners here from the parts list above that all the common points of failure were replaced or not (e.g., I can't tell if this work included replacing the crossover pipes). And then my second question would be if this list of parts replaced helps with process of elimination for me to do some targeted investigation, and where I should focus. I have a pressure testing kit on order and already own a borescope and adjustable mechanic's mirrors so I'm sure I could do some poking around without having to take too much of the engine apart to trace back the leak.

Anyways, thanks in advance.

From the sounds of it, it's the rear crossover pipe. And while you're at it, you should change out the front crossover pipe as well. On these trucks, plastic has a limited life span and they will crack after a couple of years. I believe there are some aluminum ones, but I'm not sure about quality or longevity. As for the plastic ones, stick with oem, they seem to last longer.

Agree with djkasone. Rear crossover is usually called a heater manifold on the parts list. Doesn’t look like that was replaced.

I just installed the aluminum ones on my L405( 5.0L same as the LR4) they are absolutely a no brainer! The only failure point I can see are the O-rings that they come with and the coolant sensor on the rear cross over pipe. I put a small bead of sealant after each o-ring( so if the O-ring fails, the parts are siliconed on as a fail safe. ) the temperature sensor I bought new from Land Rover and tossed the one that the pipes came with. They are incredibly solid and for 150bucks off amazon I really don’t see how they can fail if they’re sealed on. Haven’t put many miles on the car since it’s been in various shops for a fueling issue but I’d highly recommend swapping to the metal ones!

Hey, “difficult to reach” is relative! After having replaced the transmission pan, filter, and mechtronic sleeve on my wife’s 2012 RRS, I’m literally thrilled to work in the engine bay again!
