I bought an 05 6 weeks ago and the battery has been dead twice. A jump starts it right up. Took it to a shop and they said the battery is fine, but they noticed that the radio and nav will power on with the key out of the ignition. I know the radio should come on in low power mode, but the nav? Could this be draining the battery over a few days?

I had a similar problem and it was the alternator. The radio and nav will come on without the key, but shouldn't run the battery down like that.

Or a bad battery. Your LR3 is right in the life cycle of needing a new battery.

So, are you saying that you can turn on your nav if the key is off or not in the ignition at all?

Yep

Yes -- nav and radio not your problem (they will go on without key in).

I would bet battery. Or alternator... but most likely battery.

The shop (they are an LR specialist) said the battery is fine.

Even though its a Land Rover repair shop (good for you btw!), I doubt they understand the LR3's battery sensitivity. Most cars will work fine with a battery kicking out 12 amps, and that's probably what they are used to. The LR3 needs more. If the battery is not in peak performance, it throws out all kinds of faults.

How does one turn the nav on without the key in? As far as I know, my '05 does not...And it doesn't sound like, even though you CAN, that you're turning the nav on and leaving it on for a couple days.
A slightly aging battery that tests good can certainly throws faults, but if the truck won't even turn over it's being drained.

I understand the 3 is a complicated truck, but why does it need so much additional juice just to start?

It's not a particularly big engine, and the compression ratio isn't that high at 10.5/1.

I can see maybe some additional faults from some sensor not recieving adequate voltage, but a not starting issue? I would guess a drain somewhere as well.

On my 2006 RRS, you push the power button on the radio... Radio and satnav stay on for a while, like 10 minutes or so, then they shut back down.
