I am a Mech E too, undergrad all the way to postgrad mechee work. But, for example, for my VW's, I have the V.A.G. (Volkswagen Audi Group) software (laptop) and tool (dongle and cable), for about $200, and I can change every parameter in the car and ECU. Very easy to do to customize the cars.
The key is to scan your car as is, save that program, then start changing stuff. If you screw up, you can reload the original and all is good. And yes, service reset is there too, you can even change the distance to service lights (for example street car at 10K miles, track car at 2K).
