I believe that there is an electrical connection to the differential (someone correct me if I'm wrong) if it is a locker. You are right, the full size spare is a nice indicator, but proves nothing as prev. owner could have just picked one of those up.

You could also call a dealer with your VIN and ask em...

I'm not exactly sure why Mike pointed out that you would have a center diff and a t/case??

If he has the H.D. option the center dif, rear locker and full size spare would be included.

I just didn't get the part about the center differential and the transfer case. They all have that...

I know this question is going to sound ignorant. I have the full size spare so I guess I have the rear locker. What exactly does this mean to me? Why would I want this over the other? Assuming I only use the LR3 for highway miles, is there a value in it for me?

HSE models all have a full size spare, but this does not mean you have a rear locker. You really need to crawl under the truck and check for yourself if your not sure.

My first one did not have the rear locker, and I made sure to get it the second time. I would say it makes a big difference, especially when climbing up steep rocky or slippery surfaces. Traction control is great, but the locker makes it much easier. If you're just using it on-road, first - shame on you , but this thread doesn't really matter to you.

They are not in any way similiar, if you have an Lr3 with the H.D option, you will have a full size spare tire, a center diff, your t/case and a rear locker.
Look and see what you have for a spare.

Mike, all LR3's have a locking center diff and transfer case. But you are correct about the full size spare tire, that is the easiest way to determine that you MIGHT have the locking rear diff, because the full size spare came as part of the HD (Heavy duty) package. If you look above the rear diff, and see a black soleniod on one side of the diff housing, that would confirm it.

Not all HSEs have a full size spare, only ones with the HD package have it. I spent a good deal of team looking under the HSEs I was looking at to see if they had a full size spare to see whether or not they had the heavy duty package before ever looking at the window sticker, and almost all of them didn't have one.

I stand corrected then. I was under the impression that a full size spare was part of the HSE package. But my main point was that just because you look up and see a full size spare doesn't mean that you have a rear locker especially when you are the second owner. Again, there is only one way to confirm for those who are unsure as Nathan has stated above. Thanks for the clarification Chesapeake!
