REAR DIFFERENTIAL PROBLEM

My '06 LR3 HSE is throwing codes that my indie shop doesn't want to touch.

They read as such:

REAR DIFFERENTIAL CONTROL MODULE
2 faults present
P0900-00 Clutch actuator-circuit/open
P080A-00 Clutch position is not learnt

Does anyone have any idea what I'm about to get into here?

Dan, do you have the HD Package? (i.e., locking rear diff and full-sized spare)....if so, I think I know what's up.

I do have the locking rear diff and full-sized spare, if that's the HD package. I was thinking that was part of the HSE package!
Anyway, if you have any ideas, I'm open!

I was getting that same fault, even RIGHT AFTER replacing the rear diff. The cause is the locking motor/actuator that sits on top of the pumpkin. Replace that, program as necessary, and you are good to go. If you haven't changed the fluid in the rear diff in a while, that'd probably be a good idea, too.

Hahaha....well, I don't know that stuff off the top of my head. I'd find out the same way you would, either internet or call my Dealer Parts Dept....I'm sure I have it on a printed invoice somewhere but finding that would take longer. As for the programming, if any is required, I don't really know. I didn't do it myself.

I just got a little info today from another shop that specializes in Rovers. They have a good reputation from the local N TX Rover club. I just haven't worked with them before. They will tackle this project. The owner told me that actuator and the motor involved in making the locker work, are a combined set; you don't replace one without the other, if I understand it right.
They would scan the whole system first, to make sure there are no systems interfering with this one, or vice versa; then check for loose wires, bad connections, etc.
If there are no complications, the bill for the job is $1120. There is some programming involved in making the actuator/motor work.
One thing's for sure--we're not driving Jeeps!!!

That sounds WAY too expensive, even for a Land Rover. The part is a couple hundred bucks if I recall correctly and the labor for the R&R shouldn't be more than an hour, maybe two. Should be about half of that bill. I had mine replaced at the dealer, and I didn't pay anywhere near that.

Well, I looked up the parts on LandRoverParts.com. The actuator was around $157 and the motor was around $450.
He sounded like it was not the most fun or frequent thing that he does!

I can't remember if I changed both or just one. I can go dig up my invoice if you think it would help you. My only suggestion though, is that you get a second quote, even if it's from your local dealer service department. The labor cost sounds high.
