Loosing coolant but no puddles or smells or aything

Ok here s the deal on my 98 Disco with 107K my heater cut in and out so I checked the coolant it was low like expected; but it has been a little over a month and the heater started acting up again so I checked the coolant again, it was empty. It being only a month since I filled it last I believe I have a coolant leak but no signs of puddling outside, floor board not wet from heater core, I was told it may have a leak into the block. I will be checking the spark plugs this weekend.

Question is:

How common is it for 98 Disco 1 to have cooling system problems?

Where else should I look for a leak?

Any help would be appreciated.

If it is a Rover the odds are good to have coolant leaks.

I check my fluid levels weekly at minimum. The odds are you either have a hose clamp seeping, or the rear of the intake manifold is leaking.

Could also be a head gasket. Check oil if you are increasing in oil... bad, if not it is just a leak and keep filling and drive.

Put a new coolant cap on it

As stated the cap could be the issue, and if you still have the old black tank, this could be leaking as well.

I didn't have this on my '96, but do on my '03. Usual failure mode is the valley gasket so the coolant doesn't make it to the ground.

Talk to a Land Rover tech who can explain it better than me.

Mine loses about 2 oz per 2000 miles so it isn't a big deal. I just check the fluid regularly and top up the reservoir.

Like Joey pointed out - don't forget to check clamps as well - you can lose quite a bit through a slightly loose clamped area when its under pressure (i.e., it will mist out so you won't get the tell-tale stench that you get from big puddling leaks). Of course, my main eak turned out to be the intake manifold/valley gasket at the rear (i.e., toward the firewall).
