Yeah, i have this issue too. 2 things I have been told about.

1. Stick a bar of irish spring soap under your hood somewhere, apparently the strong smell keeps rata away
2. Get a "rat zapper" and put near your car.

Apparently peppermint oil does the trick.
My mother parks her '05 outside, near Sacramento, and has had the chewed harness issue. Her mechanic suggested soaking cotton balls in peppermint oil, wrapping those loosely in aluminum foil and placing them in the engine compartment.
We also installed an ultrasonic emitter purchased off of Amazon.
Four weeks so far without any chewed cables.

We've had a big problem with rats in our cars. I brought a couple of electronic devices, which seemed to have done the trick. I linked the device below. It looks like it's out of stock but, there are at least a dozen similar devices.

I also put a small trap (cage type, as my wife doesn't want to **** anybody) under the landrover. It's small enough that raccoons, possums, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, and bears can't get into it (actually, there are no bears where I live).

Gentlemen, I thought the question was valid as I live in the mountains where rats love to hide under the hood. I leave the hood up and place a work light on the block with a 20 watt bulb ( They don't like light when they nest and the answer to the guy that never heard of the hood being up) The trouble with the Rat Sachets is that it is dehydrator, they eat it and go hide in your compartment, dry out and die, thank goodness they don't smell. but who who wants to find a dead rat when playing under the hood of your LR?
This is only my second post/Reply here, I read so many dumb Axx answers such as the Cat one that I just read the blog and stay off it. The moderators should take control of the idiots who post goofy replies.

Ive been here for almost 10 years. And definitely not a contributor as much as some of the guys here. These same guys are knowledgeable in thr LR world and I have learned much from them. Yes, there have been trolls here asking silly questions, and yes there have been some friendly jest/jokes/carves here as well. What would one expect in a guys car forum? Thanks for explaining the hood being up. I personally have not heard of that either but was too lazy to comment as such. I never knew where u usually parked or the rationale behind that tactic. Makes total sense now. The mere fact that some of these guys here answered u to me is a genuine interest in your situation and not out to insult u. Ive seen it when an obvious troll question is posted that person is ignored. Your post has generated a good discussion on this topic which is the true spirit of these types of forums.

Cats don’t keep rodents away? That’s news to me.

Ive had problem way back with 93 lexus and atvs. Leaving vehicle parked up seems to be root of the problem. We work from home and have multiple vehicles nowadays..
Regarding rat deterrents seems peppermint oil is one of the most recognised and effective
