My 2010 LR4 V8 205k km has been a paragon of reliability the past little while.
Today I noticed a clicking-type noise with the hood open at idle. It's intermittent. Revved engine and it went away temporarily. Link to recording below. Seems to be coming from the top of the engine towards the front. Got my stethoscope out. Can hear it from the throttle body but that is a bit of an amplifier. Engine was warm after being driven for 20 mins. -2 deg C here today. Note engine replaced by LR at 80k km.
Sound familiar to anyone?

Maybe fan clutch, but sounds a little different to me. I wonder if the fan is hitting the brush guard in the fan shroud - the sound is kind of “soft” like that. I’ve seen reports of this happening as the motor mounts start to wear (when you rev the motor, it shifts enough to stop rubbing), but never heard it myself before. If that’s it, best solution is to change the mounts, but it’s not easy, so I think a lot of people just remove the brush guard and/or trim whatever parts of the shroud are rubbing.

Ah that's a thought. I did read about worn motor mounts and the fan shroud elsewhere. The noise is odd in that it doesn't always have a steady rhythm. If it was mechanical and engine related it would. I will investigate further! Is there an easy way to confirm if the motor mounts are worn? I guess crawl u der in the snow and inspect. Have not noticed excessive engine vibration.

I second this, would do some investigating around the fan shroud, but just based off of the sound I'd guess fan clutch guess fan clutch before anything timing or injector related.

Apologies, anyone should be able to access the link now
Sorry, I don't know that sound. It doesn't sound metallic on my speakers, more of a thump. It also sounded louder on the drivers side. I would try to narrow it down. Because the sound goes away, try the suggested fan clutch replacement. Check the belt tension, the tensioner, idler pully and things in front of the engine. Also see if the A/C ON/OFF has any affect. You'll need to take it apart to inspect for problems or take it to a mechanic.

I guess first thing to do is just try spinning the fan by hand with the engine off, and see if you hear it hitting the guard at all.

As for the motor mounts, you really can’t see them under the car. But, if you pop the hood, you should be able to see a little of the top of the motor through the space between the hood and the windshield cowling. See how much it moves when you punch the gas. Also, see how much it moves when you put the engine into drive from park or neutral (just at idle).

If the fan is hitting, you don’t necessarily need to do the mounts yet - just trim/adjust the shroud. It would be best to change the mounts, but it doesn’t seem to be an easy job - especially the drivers side mount.

Probably Fan clutch. Mine does it as well. Tick.....Tick.....Tick...... Goes away when you rev it.
