has anyone eliminated the center muffler on a discovery 1, particularly a 1996? theoretically, what would be the benefits? cost? i am in a city that has emission testing. i don't think the muffler affects emissions, though. how loud does the disco get with out this muffler? will this effect the life span of the rear muffler? am i using affect and effect properly?

there is a rattle coming from the center muffler not the heat shield above it. when the truck was running and the rattle was rattling away i held the heat shield to stop the noise. the shield was not vibrating or causing the sound. it seemed as if the sound was/is coming from inside the muffler itself. what in the center muffler would cause this noise?

whilst under the rover exploring this rattle i noticed a small hole in the center of the center muffler. looks like screw hole. is it? it is currently open and i suppose letting exhaust out.

sorry for the longish post and thanks,

jeremiah

The center one is the muffler, the rear is just a resonator, not a muffler per say.

If it is rattling, the odds are it has a chunk of you CAT in there... sounds like it may be time to change your CATS which will effect emissions.

it passed emissions recently and the muffler was rattling then. no check engine light. the light does the self test when i start the truck, so, i assume no codes and therefore, i hope, good cats. i should know this, i suppose, but what does a resonator do? resonate? any idea why the small hole in the bottom of the muffler, joey?

just in case, anybody know of any links for cheap cats?

thanks again.

Small hole is for water drainage.

as long as it passes emissions, don't worry about the cats, it is basically small pieces breaking off and going down stream.

The Resonator will keep the loud rumble down around 2500 - 3000 RPM's, this noise will sound like a drone so to speak. just a low noise that will annoy anyone not willing to live with it.
