Crank shaft pulley in 2 pieces!

So this happens a few days ago and I start hearing this noise like metal on metal. Well it was. Engine has about 125,000 miles. 06 LR3 v-6. Is this common? I have the part. Should I repair or get rid of it? All else was good. So lucky, blessed whatever you want to call it that the belt somehow stayed on the pulley.
Anybody else experienced this?

That doesn't seem like a costly-enough job to get rid of a perfectly good LR3. Repair it and motor on!

Not sure....there are a lot fewer V6s out there so not as much data, but this is the first I've seen it.

Never seen that on any forum in 11 yrs but it could be as simple as whatever bolt held it inside the main pulley.

So a friend of mine and I pulled the crankshaft this weekend. The pulley had pulled itself apart as you can see here. I was soooo lucky as the belt tensioner prevented the belt from jumping off the remaining pulley
Here's a pic of the box the new one came in. I found a guy at Advance Auto parts, that knows his Land Rovers. It was tough getting the fan off but the pulley wasnt too bad. Be sure you have the correct puller that makes the entire difference. Hope it helps someone. Time for a cold one!!

This is getting a more common fault. There are two Land Rover Discovery 3s for sale on eBay yesterday as spares or repair with the same Fault as yours. Maybe we should all start changing the pulley when we do a Cambelt change. There’s obviously an issue here with them.

so is it two pieces that are pressed or otherwise held together? it looks like they fit together via those splines or is it something else? is the part actually broken, as in cracked or torn metal or is it that the pressed fitting simply vibrated apart or bolts came out?

I just want to know what to look for or if it's also somewhat preventable by tightening things.

Fans come off easily with correct viscous fan flat wrench size and ideally an air hammer fitting.

The pulley itself is metal then a very hard rubber composite the seems to have deteriorated over the years. The Texas heat didn't help it either. Then there's the innner shaft that it spins on.
The rubber composite appears to be like a vibration dampener. Not too well versed in the design side so maybe someone else can give us more insight in to that.
Like Ian Morrison said above, it may be a preventive maintenance item we need to consider.

Do you happen to have a picture of the correct puller to use?

ON EDIT:
BTW I believe that is the harmonic balancer, not the crank shaft. It connects to the crank shaft. If your crank shaft were in two pieces you'd not have a functioning engine and there would be no way to repair it.
