Changing Starter Motor on LR4

Had a look around the web and cannot locate anything specific to changing the starter motor on a 2012 LR4 (5.0). Found a few youtube clips on Range Rovers and LR3's but not the LR4.

Anyone done this themselves and if so, any tips?

Piece of cake, right side, take off wheel and then two plastic splash covers, solenoid wire, starter wire and three bolts. Takes abouts an hours to an hour and a half max to take out and then the same to put back together. Watch out for different nut configurations though and check the stupid starter fuse. For some ignorant reason, the solenoid is not fed off the same circuit. So one can think their starter is bad due to a solenoid click only. But the 400 AMP, nuclear detonator fuse might be blown.

I had to remove the starter motor today (while working on my timing chains) and never found a really useful removal guide so here are some notes on this topic. The body of the starter motor is secured with two bolts; they are both accessible from the cross member that goes across the front of the transmission pan; I initially identified the wrong two bolts so pay attention to the following picture:

Remove the passenger side (US) wheel, you will see the following two plastic covers:

The lower one is secured with two plastic retaining clips:

And two screws:

You have to remove the two screws to separate the two parts to get them out!

The upper cover is also secured with the plastic clips, I think three.

Continued... Once the plastic covers are removed you see this:

Here's a close up of the electrical connections, ultimately the small wire broke off the motor (my fault):

The motor came out from just behind the lower suspension arm.

Anyone got any ideas or is it a new starter? It does look to be the original!

That is the power lug for the starter solenoid

Anything I can do or do I need a new starter motor? I still have to get the cable and the old nut separated as well! So this:

It's almost as if the nut is retained in place by bending wire tabs on to the nut? I was hoping this is a spade type connector but it's not coming off with some prying with a screwdriver! I gave up for the night! Land Rover - 15 Me - 0!

Based on the amount of rust, I'm going to guess that it is original.

During reassembly after putting in the remanufactured motor I looked at those two plastic splash panels for a few hours trying to figure out the orientation.

You can solder a short piece of wire to the lug, being careful not to ground out to the starter case. Cut the rusted nut off the wire. Then use a male and female spade connector to make the connection.

I think it's the original!

I'm still pondering the next course of action, given it's age do I spring for a new one on the assumption that it will fail eventually or solder a short wire as suggested by Range Rover. Given my daughter may drive this occasionally I lean towards a new one (looking at Denso) as I don't want to leave her stranded but with all the caveats duly noted!
