The owners manual says that only experience off-roaders should do it. I've been stopping first and then make the change in Neutral. It would be more convenient to switch while rolling. What are the risks of changing the transfer case from 4Hi to 4Lo and back while moving? Is there risk of it breaking or causing additional wear that doesn't occur while stopped?

I stop fully to go into the low range box, and if I can I stop to go back into high.

Never had any issues going from low to high around 15 mph though.

Funny, I just did this past weekend. Went to N while rolling downhill while foot on brakes slowing down to around 5 mph, shifted hi/lo, and put it back in D with no issues. Then around 5-10 mph on N went from lo/hi on a flat plateau, and shifted to D without issues.

I'm looking forward to learning how to shift into low. Shifting to high sounds easier because when going into low there are more constraints. A minimum speed of 2 MPH and in parallel the vehicle speed needs to be declining. Maybe there is a check to deny the switch to low the speed is between 0 MPH and 2 MPH but there is also the case of the shift starting while traveling faster than 2 MPH, but not the shift not completing until being less than 2 MPH.

It's pretty straightforward. Per the manual, be going less than 24mph, taking foot off gas and switching into N = "slowing", then hit the button, wait for it, and back into D. There's not much more to it. And yes, I think I recall the computer will give you a message telling you the shift cannot happen because outside parameters etc.

I think the system will make sure you don't damage the transfer case while changing from lo to hi, my guess is the risk is that you might take your eyes off the trail to actuate the button, and that you might need power to avoid something but are stuck in N - to that end, being fully stopped is likely safer.

I tried out the professional way of switching the transfer case and its a better experience to make the switch while moving. The LR4 doesn't stop impressing and its AWD traction capabilities are amazing.

I'm super curious about the diagram of the front wheels in the DIC. When I turn the wheels in 4L the diagram appears and when I travel straight it disappears. I can see that I'm turning since the wheel is right in front of me and I already know that I'm turning. I'd have to be pretty lit to be using the DIC to determine if I gave steering input. I'm wondering what the use case is for it, any ideas?
