Gang,

I've got a set of BFG AT/TAs 265/65/18. Wondering what the normal street pressure should be set at. The guy who installed them always pumps them to 50 but the dealership lowered it considerably when I brought it in to get my bushings installed.

Any general rule?

Thanks in advance for any info...

BFG's run a little stiffer than some of the other all terrain tires. I think 40/42 on the road would be quite sufficient (I would experiment with 38 also), and between 18 to 20 psi on the trail.

I recall reading an interesting way to determine the proper pressure for tires. It involved using a piece of chalk or crayon to draw a line across the tread of the tire, parallel to the axle. You then drove around for a bit and examined the line you had drawn. If the line was worn away more on the outside edges of the tire, you were under-inflated. If the line was worn out more in the middle of the tread, you were over-inflated. An evenly worn line would indicate proper air pressure.
