Look at this little guy. I have two 5.0 engines and both make a very similar sound. I believe when it sticks then pops free it makes the click. Yes, mine has a fin broken off. Doesn't seem to affect anything. It should spin freely. It's on the back of the fan assembly.

With mine, once it warmed up the ticking noise went away. It was like that for over 18 months and I never bothered to do anything about it because it didn't seem to negatively impact performance. The noise got a lot louder recently and I was concerned about the fan potentially freezing up and leading to an overheating issue. I bit the bullet and got it replaced. Maybe unnecessary, but it gave me peace of mind.

Mine ticked since brand new back in 2011. 125k miles later and still ticks on a cold start/cold weather. I had read something saying during initial engine start up, the electronic fan clutch may produce a loud fan roar or an audible click for up to 3 minutes - this is normal. The noise will cease shortly after disengagement….not sure why some fans remain silent on some LR4’s and why some get silent after a replacement.

Guys,
Many thanks for your assorted responses. Much appreciated!
Obvs been a week or two and weather too crappy to investigate further. In that time did a 600 mile road trip.
The engine is now sounding downright 'clattery'. Seems a bit louder on drivers side (LHD). Link to a video below. Any further thoughts much appreciated while I wait for a decent weather window.

Progress.....well sort of.
Drove 5 mins to pick up takeout and when I restarted the engine I lost power steering and alternator charging. Limped home and had a look. The 2k km old serpentine belt has come off, so I am guessing either an idler pulley (replaced one 2k km ago) or the ps pump pulley wheel or the alternator pulley wheel has let go. It must have been a distinct failure. Hard to see, but alternator and ps pump pulley wheels seem intact, so I am thinking idler pulley or maybe the tensioner pulley has come apart. Need to look in daylight.

Problem solved.
The belt tensioner pulley wheel bearing detonated. New belt tensioner installed. Replacing the smaller idler pulley too as PM. Good thing at 205k km as after I took it off I found it's bearings are rough and noisy (other idler pulley replaced after it detonated last year). Got all parts from LR as longevity critical. Also, serpentine belt $20 cheaper from LR compared to Amazon. Go figure.

I had this happen recently, started a thread on the same somewhere here in the forum, same bearings were completely shot! This then lead to me doing the timing chains! Here's the thread:
