Has anyone's "transmission ****" returned?

I didn't really have an option. My wife wouldn't drive the car with the airbag light on. The dealership refused to do the work unless I agreed to pay. They pointed out that my VIN # was BEFORE the recall period (October 2004 build instead of November 2004--of course I know this is silly because they didn't change the design to make it bad). They pointed out that the recall related to a cracked wire connected to the clockspring, not a cracked clockspring itself (which is what I had). I have raised the issue with LRNA and they called the dealer. The dealer raised the same defenses with them and LRNA essentially said to me: "there you go--sounds reasonable."

I have an 07 SE. Been in the shop 4 times for the problem you described. They have reflashed twice and it doesn't help. I've had the shop forman look at it and the best they come up with is it is "normal." I know it isn't but absent escalating to LR North America, I'm at my wits end. I've learned to live with it but that's pretty sad given how much I paid for the truck. What's most frustrating is the LR dealer's "shrug your shoulders" attitude re: the hesitation. I love the LR3, had a Disco II, but am really thinking about switching to something else. Why cant LR just acknowledge the issue and fix it???

I know I said this in the opening thread, but in my case this isn't true.

I have seen a SW update fix it, and then another bring it back. (slightly different than the original "California Stop,") Sport mode does make it better, but doesn't fix it...just shortens the lag a bit.

Follow-up report

At the last service visit, I reported this issue to the dealership. As previously mentioned, I did have the B036 service campaign updates already applied, but that did not fix the problem.

The dealership downloaded the ECU and transmission modules again, and for now the problem has been solved. No more harsh downshift during a rolling stop. Finally!

I have suffered through this for the past 7500 miles because I just didn't want to go through the hassle of bringing the truck in before I had to go in for something else. So, I bring it in for today for 75K service and I'm told that I can fix this issue myself...

...my SA said that if you use manual shift for 2 trips. The adaptive learning thingy will reset itself and the problem will go away. According to him, my LR3 has "learned" that this is how I like to shift (that's ********) and I have to clear this memory to fix the problem.

...my options were to have them hook up their computers and clear the memory, and charge me an hour labor, or for me to do it myself by shifting manually for a while.

This of course ****** me off for several reasons;

1) If true, I should have tried this long ago. Strange thing is I've never heard it from any other owners online.

2) Why is it that I never saw this in the first 67000 miles that I owned the car? It wasn't until they loaded firmware that the problem instantly appeared.

3) Okay, I did see it once before, 2.5 years ago, and the dealer fixed it by appling "patch 7" during the B036 enhancements noted earlier.

4) Why is it acceptable for a dealership to tell you that if you use manual shift for 2 trips that will fix it, as opposed to admitting that there is a problem with the vehicle and they'll take care of it.?!?!

***??

...sounds like they will take care of it, just not for free. I understand your frustration, but it won't hurt you to drive aggressively in Command Shift for a bit. If nothing else, it will be fun.

Todd,

Unless your SA can produce a TSB that details this "solution", I'd say he is (knowingly or not) blowing smoke up you @$$. You might as well just drive in circles a few times and click your heels together.

The problem is within the program module that controls the ZF transmission. This is why there was an update released.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I had the module reflashed, and finally the problem has cleared. It's been about 4 weeks now, and problem has not returned.

I would be very concerned about the stress these harsh shifts place on the differentials and driveline components.

Keep us posted on your progress...

I took my 06 SE in for this problem last month. The service tech knew exactly what the problem was and even described the symptoms before i told him. He was very open about the problems they've had in the past with the transmission software and said the update would fix it...

IMHO if the service department doesn't know about this issue take it to a different dealer!

~Brian

PS. I should disclose that i never found out if the update fixed the problem since i ended up trading in the 06 for a CPO 07 HSE with less miles and a lower payment
