Transmission issue when cold?

I believe the consensus was to reset adaptations if the solenoids were replaced, but not if just the fluid was replaced. The adaptations account for wear in the solenoids.

The same would be true for old fluid, which may be different viscosity than new/fresh fluid. And the TCU will adapt again, to compensate for any wear in solenoids, friction materials, etc.

What I don't know is how fast it will re-adapt. In some cases a transmission might shift funny after resetting, until the TCU gradually re-adapts.

It would be interesting to hear if there have been any disaster stories related to resetting adaptation on the ZF boxes.

FYI after changing fluid and doing a zip kit at around 65k miles I did not do any resetting of adaptions of special driving protocol. All went well.

So, I'm starting to think this is (was) an electronic issue, rather than mechanical.

Took the lr4 on a 1k mile round-trip this past week. The day before I left I checked for codes and did minor iid tool changes (updated dash display and added digital speed). This required ecu reset.
Anyway, drove to Vermont and temps were as low as 15 degrees. Had no shifting issues. I can only think the ecu reset had somthing to do with this.

I'll continue monitoring this to try and figure out if it's somthing that actually still needs repair or is worth fixing.

This was the longest drive I've taken it on since purchase, and it performed perfect on and off roads, in snow and icy conditions. Didn't hesitate to start in the frigidd temperatures. And was a super comfortable for extended seat time.
Everytime I drive this car I like it more and more, and even more so that it surprises me to be completely reliable, against its reputation.

and hard shift is back and i didnt change anything. very wird that its so temperature dependent and only happens 1x per cold start, always at the same shift point.

does anyone else have an opinion of resetting transmission adapatations? yes? no?

ive been warned the transmission may (will) act weird for the first few drive cycles.
other warnings are that it shouldn't be done on high mileage trans, that it could cause it ti fail with no return.

GAP suggest i only do it if the trans has been serviced (fluid and filter change). which it was, about 6 months ago. i had no issues until we started getting into 35 degree and colder weather.

The minor slip is still there and my OCD is kicking in....telling me to fix it. combined with a recent purchase of a boat that the LR4 will need to tow, i feel the trans should be in the best of shape as it can be.

Good list. As mentioned, get the bridge and tube seals. I didn't know Valvoline MaxLife was suitable for this trans also.

Edit: Googling gets me results that say lifeguard 6 can be replaced with lifeguard 8. So by that logic, the valvoline should work.
There are also numerous posts on jaguar forums that valvoline maxlife atf is compatible and working in zf 6hpxx trans.

I should be good.

I also cross referenced the LR023288 fluid number on the Valvoline compatibility list, and that fluid was meant for the LR4.

That's good, as long as lifeguard 8 supersedes and is a suitable replacement for lifeguard 6.
