My son bought this D2 about 2 yrs ago but it has become way too expensive for him to keep. He's in college and works part time, enough for the premium gas but that's about it. He bought a drive shaft last summer, now has a blown head gasket. Estimates of 2 to 2.5K maybe more $$. It's not blowing white smoke but you can hear the compression leak out the side of the head near the left front spark plug. Actually sounds like a loose spark plug.

He's thinking of cutting his losses since this job is way outside our realm of expertise and is too expensive for him to have done.

I would think that someone who has the ability and likes to work on them could have some fun with it and end up with a good vehicle a for a lot less than we ever could.

So my question is what would be a fair asking price for a vehicle with no other problems except for this really big problem. We live in Raleigh NC and will appreciate any input.

Really depends on mileage and oddly enough color.... but an 01 in good running order would bring around 5 maybe 6 grand if all is really good. So with issues 2k at best.

Well its black, and a pretty sharp looking vehicle. No dents or accident history. It's only got 115K miles which, to me, is low.
I was thinking/hoping $2000 but didn't know if that was too much to try for.
Thanks for the input.

If you and a halfway mechanical friend were to repair it, would cost you around $300 in parts, something to think about.

Unless it needs sleeves, then for $1500 you can completely have it done with better than factory sleeves.

Fix it. It's not that difficult. Place to work, lots of coffee cans and zip lock backs, digital photo everything as it comes off... heads out to a shop if not flat ($75) reassemble... time will be about 3 hours a day for 10 days... Experienced techs can do them in one day...
everyone has a friend that can stop over and give advise at the tough spots. FIX it.

It won't be worth any less in pieces than it is now. Especially if all the pieces are labelled :) FIX IT.
