RR 2012 Clicking Sound

I noticed a few times I have turned on the Range Rover, (has been cold here down to 29) that I here a
clicking sound in the front. Goes away after running it for a bit, but noticed it again today and it was not
cold last night?

Anyone have any idea what I should be looking at to see what that sound is?

I asked this question and in the meantime have found out on you tube, that it could be a timing chain
issue, as all 2010 tO 2012 Range Rover, RR sport and LR4, with a Ford 5.0 engine, this clicking, knocking sound can happen around the 50M to 60M mile. In my 2012 RR, it just started and as I said it has been cold and it is not all the time just on start up and sometimes on idle, but I want to know if I should be addressing this issue now vs later when it can get worse.

So, has anyone on this forum expierenced anything like this? I understand this could be a very costly
repair.

There are tons of posts on the timing chain topic, most in the LR4 forum - bottom line, the full repair can be as much as $7500 at a dealer, and as little as $3500-$4000 at an independent shop. You just need to make sure whoever is doing the work for you has done it before - it's not ideal to be the guinea pig for this particular service.

It's a very labor intensive job and things need to line up perfectly to get the timing right. You can buy the parts here or at least use it as a price comparrison tool for any quotes you may get:

So I don’t doubt the timing chain issue is out there... but wanted to share a recent experience on my 12 lr4 5.0 hse. Same exact symptoms.. knocking noise from the front on idle.... sounded the same. Independent shop couldn’t address, so I sucked it up and brought to lr dealer... turns out that it was just related to bad water pump.... so only a 1k fix; thankfully not the 7k one

So yours was just a water pump related issue? Interestingly enough, I found a car fax record that said
my Range Rover Sport had its water pump replaced back in July of 2013 at only 14,931 miles.

I found that a bit odd being such a newer vehicle, but it happened. I am now wondering after reading your reply if I may be experiencing the same issue. Will check it out with my dealer.

There is a lot to be gained by purchasing a diagnostic stethoscope to pinpoint ticks and tocks in the engine. I'm sure there are videos on you tube showing the technique but like anything else under the hood, if you have very little mechanical knowledge then it's better to take a chance with the repair shop. I just feel that knowing as much before you go in for service arms you with knowledge to be wary of over diagnosis.

Hi Sheila, did you ever find out what the issue was? Currently shopping for a 2012 RR Supercharged and I noticed the same noise upon start-up on a truck I’m considering. Curious to hear what the problem/resolution was. Thanks.

Hello:

I have not yet, will be taking it to my mechanic next month for a 6 month checkup. Have not heard the
clicking sound in the last month, but it does not mean that it is still not there. I will post as soon as I know if there is an issue. If you have read other posts on this, it can be the sign of something else or it can be a a major issue.
It seems that the LR's and the Range Rovers are noted for this. I went on youtube and found under
British Works a video showing what that clicking sound could mean and it made sense, only it was not
good news
