Well, I've tried to lubricate my gas struts on the rear lift gate, but they just don't have the oomph any more to open the glass all the way...and they do it slowly at that.

Can I replace these with standard auto shop struts or are there any better suited for the LR3?

Thanks!

Just get the part # that fits length wise.

Real easy to replace, look on each end, there is a metal band, pop that loose and it will come off the ball it's on.

You can find replacement struts on-line at the normal LR LR3 places. They are much less expensive than the dealer. I just ran across them on-line at a good price but can't remember if it was British Parts, Rover, or maybe on eBay now that I think about it.

An auto parts store might have them, as there might be another vehicle that uses the same length.

That's pretty good. A pair of good hood struts is about the same.

Okay, sounds like any strut is fine. I didn't know if Bosch or someone made a set that is a little beefier and longer lasting. Not that I'm complaining as the factory set lasted me to 115K.

I ended up buying the StrongArm 6614s off Amazon for 21.42 a piece + free shipping. I'll just hope they're not lemons. Not a lot of info on the web regarding gas struts.

The StrongArms mentioned arrived and seem to do the job fine in case anyone is looking. I took some pictures for comparison. The ends of the OE strut are beefier than the StrongArm, but otherwise things look identical;

Oh, also the shaft on the OE is black vs. silver on the long arm. But I'm not sure if that is by design or it just turns black over time.

Ever since I put the rear access ladder on my rear hatch glass of my LR4, the struts seem to be under-powered to reliably lift and hold the glass panel up. During the summer when it's warm, they do fine. However, in the colder weather they consistently allow the glass portion of the hatch to slowly fall back down and then close. The basic replacement part is pretty cheap, but I was wondering if anyone has found a heavy-duty replacement strut. My access ladder is the larger clamp-on type that fits on the passenger's side rather than the one that attaches above the license plate holder on the driver's side. Maybe a new set of the standard struts will do the job just fine. Not sure if they have ever been replaced. For the price, it might be worth it to try, but I would rather have something more heavy-duty the first time than something that kind of works, but really doesn't.
