Even though I've been having a very intermittent emissions fault, p0430, I decided I was going to try and get an inspection sticker today. In my state you need 250 miles without a CEL or clearing codes. I started the day with about 50 miles of no CEL. I didn't even reach closed loop operation before it flipped to permanent.

Pulled over, cleared the code, and then went on my way with almost a full tank of gas. Drove north on the highway about 40 miles and turned around headed back south, I check and I have p0430 "pending". After about 80 miles I decided to press on and headed west on rte 2 in Massachusetts. Lovely highway this time of year in New England. Somewhere between 100 and 150 miles it flipped to "historic". At this point I'm getting confident. I go over the French King Bridge over the Connecticut River and turn around. I was about 70 miles from home and 75 miles from reaching my milestone. I make it back to town with another 5 miles needed and on E. Get some gas and make sure the inspection station is still open. P0430 is still "historic". I start with my victory lap of town for those last few miles. Refresh the code reader ...

P0430 pending.

At this point I didn't really care about anything anymore. Figured I'd just go to the station get the inspection and if a pending code gives me the red R of shame so be it.

While waiting the person in front of me asks what year it is. I share that the motor is new. He says he always liked them, but was nervous about the reliability. I pointed out that you can do 300 miles of cruising down the highway and then go hit the trails no problem. To my surprise his other car is a 2 door Rubicon, to which he admits could not do the same thing as comfortably. We've all had some variation of this conversation.

On with my inspection. Come to find out a pending emissions fault does not register in their system.

I'll probably keep driving as is for a while. Some day try and get in there to check the exhaust manifold gasket for a leak. Maybe get a smoke machine. Really rule out everything before buying a new catalytic converter.

@ebp02 or anyone else that has purchased an LR4 to replace the engine themselves?

Where did you find one? Just randomly searching for vehicles on the internet or is there a good source?

Thanks in advance.

It does not seem to be common here but LR does sell certified remanufactured stripped (without accessories) engines.

I have one in my LR2. While the dealer was in there, there were a number of other components changed by LR completed on good will, without charge. I’d do it again if I had to.

car-part.com that's where parts yards list their stuff. Look at price and mileage and get calling. LR4 AJs should be bolt on, Land Rover Range Rover AJs should work. I got an AJ126 out of an XF, just made sure the plug for the oil pump was present like mine had it (under the alternator or power steering) had to transfer my oil pan, tap a hole to hold the LR4 style oil pick up and that LR4 oil pickup.

Ordered a remanufactured long block from tapa out in California. You can find them on eBay, guy was great to work with.

So far I'm almost 3000 miles into the new motor and feel comfortable throwing more money at it for stuff I want.

I am aware of one 2016 LR4 in the USA for 5,000 and it is single speed transfer case. Another in the 8k range that seller is unresponsive to.

I use Autotempest and some other sites to search.
