Replace the engine but plan to plow 4k per year into it to keep it on the road from here on in.

Still not a LR4 tho.
Not even close. I looked hard at buying one and was shopping for about 3 months. I didn't want to pay overinflated values for a 4Runner and the XTerras are just as reliable. Then a LR4 came up on Craigslist and I stopped looking at anything other than LR4's after I test drove it.

Park it with the window open and fob on the seat in a bad neighbourhood.

My wife likes the LR4 enough and thinks highly of my abilities so I'm attempting an engine removal in the driveway. Current status is that the front clip has been removed. Fan, radiator, and trans cooler are out. Batteries and battery boxes are out.

The AC condenser is still in place, plan is to disconnect the compressor from the block and leave the entire system in the vehicle. I really don't want to deal with trying to recover the AC refrigerant.

Catalysts are out and all bell housing bolts are out. That last bit is a pretty big milestone in my mind, I really wasn't sure if I'd be able to access all of them. One of the bell housing bolts, 1 o'clock as viewed from the front bumper, has a stud on it. Made for a bit of a challenge to locate by feel.

Next up are to disconnect the heater core and remove all coolant hoses from the front. Disconnect and remove any vacuum lines and wiring I can. Then hopefully motor mounts and out it comes.

Anyone know the length of the output on the crank, I'd like to know that I've made enough room. Current free space in front of the engine is 8"

Only pieces broken so far are one of the fuel line clips and one stud on the passenger side catalyst to muffler flange.

I bought one with a blown engine, did the swap myself. I sourced an XF engine with 12k miles for like $6k, swapped the oil pan, tapped a hole for the oil pick up and installed it along with new seals and upgraded coolant bits. Been driving it for like 8k miles and other than some ground issues everything has been great.

When I did my swap I had the AC evacuated and that let me pull the entire front end, my garage is average height so I was just able to clear the bumper beam with the cherry picker Jerry rigged pretty much up to the supercharger. If you got room you should be able to pull the engine with the ac system intact, just put the hood in service mode.

I don't understand the crank question, what I do know is that once the bell housing is loose and the mounts are undone just watch out when you pull the engine from the trans, the torque converter has a T shape pin/shaft and that got hooked on the crank and it pulled it from the trans, also while struggling with that torque converter I managed to mangle a power steering hard line so yeah be patient lol.

The swap is not too bad, if I wasn't waiting on parts it would've taken me a day to pull and a day to install and half a day or so to transfer parts and get the other engine ready to install. I'm no mechanic, just like cars and too cheap to pay, but have done a few engine swaps on different cars.

Based on your update, I’m on the same page with your wife regarding your capabilities for engine removal assuming you have the basic tools to get it done. Get after it! These trucks are not that hard to work on based on my experience.

What’s your plan for the engine? Find a replacement or rebuild the existing blown engine? That’s where downtime and replacement parts starts to add up.

TBD on the engine. Once it is out I'll probably do a mild tear down to see what actually is the problem and go from there. Getting it rebuilt only makes sense if I can find someone local who's willing to do the work.

While the bumper is off and the engine is out, what else should I replace? Motor mounts are obvious. Coolant pipes were supposedly replaced prior to my purchase. I'll go with a new radiator. EAS valve block maybe?

You can put the hood in service mode for more room.
Disconnect the hood struts and flip the hood vertical. Then flip the locking tabs into place.
