Hello All,
I'm a proud owner of a 2006 Silver LR3 with 40,000 miles. I purchased the truck brand new, and I love it. I have been having a few problems, and I would lke to ask your advice.

Problem # 1 : I have had a rattle noise from my rear taligate from day 1. It has been to the dealer many times, and they can't fix it... Any ideas??

Problem # 2 : When I slow down almost to a stop and re acclerate, it feels like someone hits my truck from behind. It bangs into gear.... Any Ideas??

Problem # 3 : I had my brakes replaced at the dealer at about 23,000 miles. They did a complete brake job which included pads and rotors. I now have 40,000 miles and they still squeak. They squeaked from day one. It has been back to the dealer a few times for this problem, and they still skueak. I have been told that the squeak is normal.... Any ideas??

And finally, I hit a bump in the road recently, and my stearing wheel made a loud knock noise... Any ideas??

Thanks for your help

1. Could be due to the capture nut that holds on the struts. There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) on this. It is not normal to have the rear rattle problematically or on smooth roads.

2. This is a very typical and known issue. There is a TSB on this also. It's just a software patch for the transmission that fixes this...or at least greatly reduces it.

3. Brake squeak has nothing to do with the status of the rotors and pads. They should not squeak. Having the pads done at 23,000 miles is pretty normal, having the rotors done also at that mileage is not nearly as common. Most seem to be getting about 40k miles on the original rotors, some considerably more miles, but not many of us can claim that. When the pads are replaced, assuming evenly worn (not warped) rotors, the simple application of a anti-squeak compound on the brake pads & rotors eliminates the squeak. Usually.

Anticipating your next question, ANY shop can do the brakes, they are very simple and straightforward to do. You can do it yourself if you wish. There are at least 5 different mfr's of aftermarket brake pads for the LR3, or you can get the factory OEM ones made by Ferodo from Atlantic British. You typically will need to replace the sensor pads at the same time (they are about $15 each). It generally costs about $400 to replace the pads all the way around and about $800 for pads and rotors, OUTSIDE of the dealer.

4. Again, common issue. The culprit is one of or all of the following items:
- steering column bushing (TSB item)
- lower front control arm bushing (TSB item)
- anti-roll bar bushings (TSB item)

These Land Rover LR3's are terrific vehicles, but they are provided with bushings made of peanut butter and they just don't hold up well.

its sounds as if your dealer is not terribly competent, it sounds like your truck has not be updated properly, and it sounds like you need to spend some quality time at www.disco3.co.uk learning more than your dealer knows so that you can claim victory over their ignorance....or find a better dealer or even better, a good independent Land Rover shop with full access to the current software. If you are in SoCal, you have many good options that I can share with you.

I just remembered that the rear tailgate rattle is much louder during the colder weather.

try greasing the contact points of the upper and lower tailgate points. There is a plastic contact point on the 06 upper gate that likes to make noises as the body flexes.

Later years they changed it to rubber as not to make noise.

Had my front lower control arm bushings replaced recently under warranty at about 40k on my 06 and no more knocking.
