I know, I am a girl. But I do off road. Roof lighting is what I am looking for, used to off road with other buddies, but am getting into myself now, so i don't exactly know what I am looking for. If anyone has pictures of their roof lights, that would be great. I'm not interested in grill lights unless you think I need them to help with lighting the path. I am heading to "dangerous road" in California, and the trails go past night fall. Will the beams from the roof and the headlights be enough to light the paths?

anyone selling a roof rack?

WOW, its a tiny minority that actually go off-road with these. You may be one of a very few with a Y. Congrats and welcome!

There is some good posts here (and else where) about roof lights. A good example:

I find Googleing "keyword keyword landroversonly OR lrrforums OR disco3.co.uk" gets good results.

Keep us posted on what you end up doing.

As far as the actual lights, I'll make a suggestion. There are two basic styles, a spot and a flood light. If you're only getting one set of lights up there, I would lean towards flood lights as most off-roading is done at a slow speed and you don't really need to know what's a mile down the road. However, there is at least one light manufacturer that allows for some adjust ability in the beam pattern. Those are Light Force lights and they are excellent products.

Another suggestion is to wire them in such a way that you might be able to use the on-road as well. Although this could be illegal. I created this article because I needed more light in my truck, but I wanted to be able to have options in how the operate. Wiring them this way allows you to turn them on anytime you want, turn them off anytime you want, or have them come on with your high beams.

Finally, you might also look into a brush guard as that will likely offer more protection than a roof rack will in an offload environment and offer a place to mount lights. There are the off-the shelf ones, but you could also ask you buddies about a fabrication shop that could make something up for you.

You'll love being in the drivers seat!

The downside to roof mounted lights is that in really dusty/foggy, or any situation where your vision is obscured is that the lights will just blind you more. Grill mounted lights may be a better option, depends on your conditions.

That being said, hella 500s are a pretty low priced option and come in both a beam or fog style. Can be bought at auto parts store, www.amazon.com, ebay... wherever. The dealership had the wraparound style brush guard on clearence a few months ago, you may be able to pick one of those up for cheap Worked well for me.

have you ever tried Dangerous Road in California? Talked with another person on this forum about different degree angles, etc., My psyche does get to me sometimes when I'm doing this, but when doing it with a bunch of other friends and their vehicle, it is great fun!! Not too many inclines, but just enough for what I was driving before. Looking forward to taking my new LR out there. Mostly though, just off roading then camping or mtn biking. I'll let you know what i end up doing. I saw a post about suggestions regarding putting hella's on the grill, as we do sometimes off road at night, so will check out that post. Once I get everything I'm looking for, I'll post pics. :)

Thanks for the information! Typically, not any dust where we go, have had fog once, but just camped and stayed put. Am interested in the Hella's though, so I will take a look at them. Do you know of anyone else who has used them, where they placed them, how they worked? Or should I start a new thread?

You've already started a dedicated off road light thread, I would think your best approach is to keep the info in one thread. I have used Hella's before and for the price, they work great. I have a set on my trail rig, and my tow-rig. The relay's are prone to dieing on you, but you can replace them with much better ones and they seem to last a long time. Never had a problem with the bulbs.
