yep thats crap. my keys are always in the car when inside the garage. no issue with battery going on 4 years

Key proximity to the LR4, keeping it 'awake' and draining the battery has been discussed in several other threads on this forum. It is definitely a problem on my 2011 HSE Lux. I have solved the problem by making a point to have the key at more than a meter from the vehicle. There is a convenient stash place on the vehicle that is outside of the range of any sensors - PM me if you want the location (don't want to post that publicly).
I'm interested by LR4 owners who report this being a 'non issue'; maybe different year and/or version of firmware...but with my 2011 HSE Lux (with all updates the dealer could find to apply) it is definitely a problem.

i had a the first year lr4 and i have 2013 - keys are always left inside the car - no issues with either car

We have a loaded LUX too with Rear Seat Entertainment. With our previous key location inside the door, when you opened the door to the LR4, the RSE system would go on, now it doesn't with the new key location. Maybe other people don't have the same options either. We have that fridge in the counsel, who knows...Not sure why all the people are frothing at the mouth about it, geez just relax, last time I post any FWIW info here.
I don't think anybody is frothing at the mouth at all. If keeping the key out of the car works, then it works. It's good FWIW information to know if this should arise with anybody else. So officially, thank you for posting

Is it possible that this issue begins when the vehicle is locked? I notice most people who do not have this issue leave their keys in or next to their LR4, which I then presume is left unlocked. I would think the perimeter check for a nearby key would not begin until the vehicle is locked. Just a thought.

fair. thanks. I should also note that our car is equipped with lojack as well. Not sure if that makes a difference.
And yes, it could have just been BS and it was just a bad battery, who knows. Given that the car electronics came on including the screens for the RES, when the keys were stored nearby, I am inclined to believe there's something to it.
having been a factory rep for an auto manufacturer at one time in my life, I could tell you stories of the things I've seen go wrong with a vehicle that you'd never believe.

My take on this is that @Davidinseattle 's car sits for long periods of times between trips. That's why it is an issue.
If it is your daily driver, the vehicle is always getting a fresh charge so it is a non-issue. It's when the car is there for weeks at a time, constantly checking status...drains the battery.
The power usage has always been a problem on the LR3, though, and I guess the LR4 also. Can't sit on the tailgate and play the car stereo for too long as all those computers waiting for you to drive suck out all the juice!

Hi All, I'm new to this forum and love it so far. I own a 2011 LR4 and just thought i'd add my two cents.
I have a limited edition version which unfortunately does not come with the ECU option an arm rest fridge nor full keyless entry, nor folding mirrors. Maybe when they said limited edition they meant limited features haha.
My factory battery didnt last 2 years. I bought a replacement from O-Reilly with a warranty that didnt last 6 months. I used the warranty and upgraded to a larger version which has been going 2 years strong now.
When I first called to ask the dealer if these batteries typically go out in less than 2 years he said yes. He said the amount of electronics in the cars just drains the battery quickly. The dealer also told me to leave my car key out of the vehicle.
Here's my take on that comment. It really does depend on what firmware version you have, and how many options you have in your car. Because these are "wireless" keys, certain accessory and functional modules within the car are enabled soon as the key is in range. Since i still have to pull my key out of my pocket to unlock my doors, i don't think as many modules are enabled in my car. I've left my keys in the car for a week without issue. And newer versions may have addressed the power consumption issue. Older cars may not have as many enabled power modules but to be safe, all dealerships seem to just generically tell you to leave your keys out of the car.
Being an electrical engineer, i'm guessing this is an oversight on LandRover's part in accounting for wireless keys being left in proximity and adding some type of timeout feature in the electronics design. If it's fixable with a FW/SW upgrade, i'm sure they tried to charge you at the dealership for the update
