how to replace vehicle speed sensor?

Hi
I am getting a bunch of missfire error codes. This is still after having replaces plugs, wires, front o2 sensors ($700 ). from further reading here others have experienced the same and it seems that the vehicle speed sensor seems a good bet.

I read that this should cost about $100 to do. Is this something that i can do myself or is it very technical ? Where can i find instructions on replacing this module?

The VSS is attached with a hex drive bolt. First unhook the wiring harness. Take the VSS off (use 2 6" 3/8" extensions and a ratchet to clear the exhaust pipe and parking brake), plug the square drive into the hole, and reattach the bolt. Reattach the wiring harness and you're all set.

I think there's a thread or two on here about it...seems like maybe there was a link to another site with pics.

I tried to search for a good thread, but really could not find anything with directions. Always remember to try www.google.com too aharbour, because even with all of the great minds here--myself not included--its difficult to remember every thread...that said, if you take your time it is an easy job, dont pay anyone to work on it--and yeah, the VSS will run about 100bux unless you can find a better deal

Question, why was your quote so expensive for the 02 sensors? www.roverparts.com has D1 O2 sensor for 130 each...even if you got all four replaced, it would only be 520 dollars, heck the plugs and wires should not have fun more than 100, so you coulda saved 80 dollars and got two sensors more installed, not 700 for just two and the plugs/wires! If i read any of this wrong I am sorry, just trying to save you a few $$$ next time, just make sure you get the right ones for your engine (4.0 litre w/evaporative loss vs. 4.0 liter w/o evaporative loss, it tells how to ID at the site, or just call them, they are great people there at Atlantic British), sorry, I know its like rule #452.a.2 that you are not supposed to tell people cheaper prices for parts they already bought....hope you get the engine purrrrrrrrring and eatin gas again!

Thanks for the link with photos - sounds like i can do it myself.
Stupid question - the instructions refer to the parking brake being in the way/close by. This change is UNDERNEATH the car not inside it right?

Thanks for the advice, but I paid $130 each for the O2 sensors. Although I want not impressed with the shop that I used they did let me order the parts over the internet and have them delivered to them - saving me $400 on parts that would have come from the dealer. The $700 cost also included new wires, plugs and labor.

actually for an even better tip dont be afraid to call a parts place in the UK - I replaced a tiny part for my headlights for $5 plus international shipping since over here I would have had to buy the entire $150 unit.

Great, glad to hear you made good with the prices...thats priority #2, behind safety....

The instructions might be referring to the parking brake DRUM. It is the ********* round thing near the back of the transfer case. If you crawl under the car and stare at it for a bit, you will see the ********* parking brake drum, dont know off had how close it is to the sensor locations, but no, it is not talking about the parking brake lever inside of the vehicle.
