Hey everybody, just want to introduce myself. Anyway, I am in the market for an 04 discovery HSE or SE with SLS, and need some info from true land rover-ers before i get the car. Does the navigation system on the HSE have a british guy's voice as on the range rover?

Hi there,

Wish I were in your shoes - being able to buy a new vehicle!

I haven't heard the navigation system but you should be able to go and test it out at your friendly LR dealer.

Be warned though, if you are buying the V8 it is one thirsty motor! So unless you actually plan to use it offroad, you probably will be penalising yourself with a hefty fuel bill for the priviledge.

I am located in the good ol' US of A where the 4.6 liter V8 from the last gen range rover is the only engine available

Good choice! I think that voice is somewhat asian/african accent. You will like it.

Welcome to the group, what are you plans for the truck?
Do you need the rear seats, if not stay away from them as they can sure take up alot of space as well as the rear step will be one of the first ittems to be torn off if you do much off roading.
Enjoy,Mike J.

no rear seats for me. I want to get into a new SE (not SE7) with in the next week. Should I get the self leveling suspension? Does it actually make the car handle better on road? I know that it comes with a thicker rear roll bar, and was curious if there was better stability/handling with this option.

I have the SLS and it works really well to keep you level on the road, I like it even better off the road for the extra height it is able to give me when I need it.
Some like it, some don't, one other thing I have noticed is that it is slight firmer yet smoother on the highway.

I too like my SLS for the same reasons that discomike stated. There is one caveat however, having SLS on a Discovery makes it so that you cannot use a weight distribution hitch (i.e., used to tow a travel trailer). This is a response from LR corporate on the topic:

Installing additional stabilizing equipment on your Discovery is not necessary as the vehicle is already designed to withstand the load created by the trailer and hitch system. Adding stabilizing bars or chains to the vehicle will increase the torsional load on the hitch, possibly causing it to be ripped off the rear of the vehicle. This is not absolute, but is a possibility, so is therefore not recommended. In addition, please remember to adhere to the maximum weights listed in the owner's manual/discussed in the last e-mail and use only Land Rover approved parts and accessories.

I have consulted your vehicle owner's manual and as we are not a technical facility, the only information I can confidently provide to you is that listed on pages 146-153 of the manual and the description above. For any specific questions or recommendations, you will need to consult the service or parts departments at your authorized retailer. They will be able to explain this issue in greater detail and answer any other specific questions you may have.
