So, I’ve stumped two shops with this issue…now waiting on an appointment at the dealership.
I recently did an in-depth overhaul of this new to me 200,000 mile L405 5.0SC
replaced everything I could get my hands on
Motor mounts, injectors, plugs, coils, water pump, metal cross over pipes for from and rear, alternator, every pulley and tensioner, intake gaskets, supercharger gasket, harmonic balancer, vacuum pump, valve cover gaskets, PCV valves, both high pressure fuel pumps, the low pressure fuel pump in the tank, fuel filter, both fuel pressure sensors and right now a shop is replacing the fuel lines…

The issue is essentially limp mode beyond 4000RPM. Car will run like a bat out of hell up until 4000rpm then it will cut out, feel like it goes into neutral till rpm’s fall back to 4000 then it will just maintain 4000 no matter how hard your standing on the gas. Transmission shifts smooth through all 8 and car will do 130mph+ AS LONG AS YOU DONT EXCEED 4000rpm to get there.
Only code the keeps coming up is P0089-92 fuel pressure regulator performance.

First shop said it’s “ definitely transmission problems” and recommended an 11,000 dollar transmission
Second shop said its crank shaft position sensors so replace them, said it was fixed, I test drove it and it was the exact same. Now they’re saying it’s fuel lines and the “ regulator inside the stainless lines between the fuel rail and HPFP” which as far as I know doesn’t exist..
Anyone have suggestions? Did not have the issues before I started the overhaul.

Sounds like the high pressure fuel pumps are out of time.
Chain for the balance shaft may have jumped time. Balance shaft operates the pumps.

It involves locking the flywheel , removing the vacuum pump and installing an alignment tool into the vacuum pump drive.

yes, was hoping that would be off but unfortunately it’s in time. Cam slot lines up with the bolt holes with cylinder 1 locked in TDC. Now getting catalyst system below threshold bank 1 and 2. Assuming it’s a related code due to the fuel pressure codes. I’m officially out of ideas. Not sure what normal long term fuel trims are supposed to be. Drove it for 30 minutes the other day above 6000 rpm( not really under a load just kinda cruising in lower gears but the second you get after it and put a real load on the engine it cuts down to 4000) have an appointment with Land Rover palm beach on Monday…. Have a feeling they will just say to replace everything that was just replaced so assuming this will be another waste of money.

The timing marks on the fuel pump drive sprocket has to line up with the colored link on the chain.
Did you use the timing tool at the vacuum pump?

I did not look at the chain marks. I removed the # 1 spark plug, rotated engine until it was tdc pulled the crank sensor and stuck the little key lock tool in. Then drained 5 qts of oil. Pulled the vac pump and stuck the timing lock in. FOMOCO legible not upside down. Pulled the HPFPs again. Took a look at the lobes. Not terrible, smooth with no lips like they have been worn down. Went to ford and bought new cam followers because the new Bosch pumps didn’t come with them. So installed new followers and put everything back together. Thought it ran better but must just be wishful thinking because it acts the same. Gf drove it the past week while I was gone, came back and it now has the catalyst codes on top of the 3 normal ones I’ve been getting.

Looks worn in the photo but honestly the top was practically smooth, just reflections make it look indented. Regardless they are now new as well.
