Last week I was driving my '05 LR3 about 20mph when all of a sudden I heard what sounded like a gunshot. In actuality, it was just my sunroof shattering. It was impossible for anything to hit it with enough force to break and there were no signs of a direct blow to the glass. Anyways, I was lucky that the LR dealership replaced it. I was worried that they wouldn't cover it under the factory warranty. Anyways, I just thought I'd post my experience and see if anyone else has had this happen. Here's a pic.

Wow; that's bad. I haven't seen any damage like that...I'm glad you got it fixed. Seeing how much glass the LR3 has on it, and knowing that a rock to the HID headlamp could cause major damage and the need for a new (expensive) headlamp unit, I got a nifty piece of auto insurace coverage from Geico called "Mechanical Breakdown." Per this coverage, ANY glass breakage is covered with a $50 deductible. Right about now I'm glad I have that. I can only imagine how much that AFT piece of glass on the top would cost !

That does look pretty bad...definetely a mfg issue. I would be very surprise if LR wont cover for this kind of problem.

Fixed glass is typically used as a stressed member, so a defect in the glass could cause breakage as the body twists. I'm glad the dealer gave you proper consideration.

...I don't think this was fixed glass, it was the sunroof.

Look about right, its tempered and its supposed to shatter into millions of little pieces instead of large shards.

Makes me wish they'd use safety glass in more places than just the windshield. I ordered my '04 Volvo V70R with laminated side windows, but the '05 didn't have it as an option, which really ****** me off. I think more use of safety glass should be employed, especially in places like the LR3 sunroof where large pieces of glass are used.

Hmmm, more ***** for me to worry about with my kids in the back seats.

I guess I'm missing something here...........the crack looks like it has NOT shattered cbboard's sunroof into a gazillion pieces like tempered glass , rather it looks like a safety/laminated type of glass to me  in fact I've seen pictures of a rollover and the top glass was , bent , buckled and distorted but not shattered:tongue:
Others may know more however:wink:

Cheers

Well, after driving my LR3 for a few days after getting it back from the shop there are a few issues. First, there is quite a bit of wind noise that previously wasn't present coming from the new sunroof area. Second, the first two sunroof screens are rattling like crazy now. So, I made my appointment to take it in again. The joy of having to schedule 3 weeks in advance! The land rover experience is great!

The fixed glass that covers 2nd and 3rd row are laminated glass, laying down looking up at the end section of the glass (where 3rd row is) it says laminated(in far corner, small print) , hope that answers your question.
