I have a 1988 V8 Disco, and the handbrake warning light has come on, and is staying on. The owners manual is in japanese (which I don't read or understand), so I don't know what the cause of the fault is. Can someone help. Thanks.

You have probley have checked this but as you brake pads ware your fluid drops. My light was on and I thought it was parking brake but it was low on fluid. Top up if low it will turn off.

Could be a faulty switch. Remove the outer switch panel next to the hand brake. Be gentle as the plastic tabs can break. Now undo the 4 screws holding on the inner panel. You should be able to see the brake switch attached at the bottom of the hand brake; it's held on by two screws. You can manoevure the switch from the park brake and return it. If the light stays on, a new switch may be the solution.
Hope this helps.
