hello all,

a few weeks ago i noticed that from time to time my 2002 discovery ll would not allow me to put it into gear, i also noticed that when this would happen the brake also would not depress. If i pumped the brake numerous times it would then go soft and the car would go into gear. It is almost like the car doesnt think that my foot is on the brake and so therefore it will not let me put it into gear, it seems to be doing this more often and i dont like it.

any ideas where i should look first?

thanks in advance khogz

Sounds like the brake switch or the little accuator that allows you to shift (works with brake switch) may be going bad. The accuator is in the shifter assymbly.

Could be a fuse. Do your blinkers work? If not, then the fuse that controls both the brake light and the blinkers is blown and the rover thinks that you are not stepping on the brake...

hey folks thanks for the replies.

yes all of my blinkers work. it only happens every once in a while but when it does it takes a few mins to get the brake to depress and then the shifter will shift. basicaly the brake stays hard and wont go down, i pump on it until it does then i can shift, and it is very random yet happening more and more often than not.

Yep, mine did the same thing. It was the brake switch. It was actually an easy and cheap fix at the dealership. I got stuck in a Starbuck's Drive Thru and mine wouldn't go into gear!
