Does that hold the bike pretty stable? It's certainly high enough off the ground.

I keep thinking somebody needs to make a bag that we can zip/velcro over bikes to keep them dust free when driving down dirt roads. Seems like it wouldn't be that difficult, could use ripstop fabric to make it light and easy to work with.

Edit: Maybe this can be the next product I build... Hmmm.

I've heard there are bags out but I haven't seen one.

when I care about keeping the bike out of the elements, it goes into the cargo box anyway:

Inside are two bikes with removal of front wheel, seat post, pedals (pedals not necessary but wheel and post are)

I wish mine would fit into a box like that. I have an XXL frame and a 29'er full suspension. It's honking big! It barely fits in the back of my DII with the front tire removed.

Edit: Nice Audi BTW. We just sold our C5 S6 Avant to get the new to us LR3.

I absolutely guarantee it would. I have a tall 29er fs too and there is plenty room to spare. The trick is a box that is wide enough. I have the thule 2100xt and the thule boxster which both allow it just fine.

The 2100 easily allows both that 29er fs and a cyclocross bike to fit with wide CX bars and brakes.

It's a nice solution when you don't have or want to use interior space. No bugs, no rain/snow/salt, no road grime, less wind resistance, etc.

Trailer Hitch

I apologize. Yes, I (along with a lot of other folks) am looking for a reasonably priced factory hitch for my 2005 LR3.

I assume you mean the receiver part that locks into the hidden hitch?

I heard about such bags again recently. Yes, that bike solution is incredibly stable. I also use the Thule upright tray style mount which is by far the easiest

Turns out they already make bags for bikes, they are mainly marketed for RV's as the one apparent side effect I hadn't considered keeps them from working on most cars. They can block taillights. I think it'd be fine on the LR3 since their so high up, not sure on the DII with some high and some in the bumper.
