LR4 manual doesn't show anything except that the drive plate of the torque converter should extend 6mm from the bell housing face. Found a manual for the ZF 8HP70 on some Russian site, doesn't show anything.

Sorry. I was thinking of a different year model.
Either way, installation of the converter would be the same.

The torque converter sits like the pic shows.
Make sure the flywheel is not on backwards.

Pulled the transmission and transfer case out and put it in the back of the trusty 240 wagon and brought it all to a transmission shop and asked them if I was a dumb dumb. Guy gave it a few tries and couldn't get passed the first stator. He said I might get lucky if I can stand it up on end. I tried to pay him for his time, got waived off with a "good luck".

...

Picked it up with the mini skid and stood it up. Some twisting and dropping from an inch or two and I felt it stick. Some jiggles and fist pounds later and it is in. Spins freely too.

Sweet.
Good thing you didn't try to use the bell housing bolts to "suck it together ".

Celebratory scotch tonight. Engine and transmission are in the truck and attached to each other. Attached the rear crossover after I got the motor in. I was concerned about it getting caught on the cowl on the way in. Pretty big milestone.

Now the hard part begins, wiring. Plan is to print out the wiring diagram and to use it as a checklist. After wiring I'll tackle the cooling system.

Did you install the wiring harness on the engine, before installing the engine?

Yikes. The harness runs behind the motor mounts.
Won't be fun trying to route the harness.
