DIY Oil Change for LR4

I've never heard of it, but if you like the European oil then you might like Liqui Moly. Its German and a lot of people suggested it to me once I stepped into the Land Rover world. I buy Mobile 1 only because I can get it cheaper off the shelf.

I picked up my 2013 LR4 with 112K miles and have used Redline 5W20 every 5K miles. Engine run smooth and no issues. It’s the same maintenance program I run on the Range Rover L405. BITOG tends to cater to the “best bang for your buck” crowd so the majority of comments will give you grief if it doesn’t beat Mobile 1 in pricing.

I personally do not believe in 10K oil change intervals so I change it every 5K miles, it’s worked out long term for my M3, M6, X5M, and now the LR4 and the Range Rover.

Mobil... The Liqui Moly is likely ok as well. The 5.0L is not high tech and is naturally aspirated, your biggest enemy is fuel dilution from the DI. Whatever you use don't extend intervals and use a proper grade and all will be good.

Up here Red line is more than double ($21/L) the cost of other high quality synthetics.

How much credit for the old oil do you get? The kit itself is $110 each time correct?

You get a refund for the purchase price as a store credit you can then apply to your next purchase. So first purchase is out of pocket, second is out of pocket too since you haven't shipped the oil back yet, but then you have a store credit from then on.

I looked at the specs to see if I've been buying the right oil and Mobil 1 isn't meeting the Ford spec WSS M2C925-A called out in the manual. I was curious if I could run regular non-synthetic oil and just change it at 3K like I've done twice already.

Interestingly, the owners manual reads "In an emergency the oil can be topped off with ILSACGF-4 API SM". That spec was obsolete in 2011 and ILSAC GF-6A is the latest spec. I'm going to start shopping around and see what brands meet that spec off-the-shelf and I'm curious if there is anything special about oil meeting that spec other than for Land Rover to control who gets our money for oil.

Just use short intervals 5-10k based on driving distance, time, load and carry on. I doubt it matters that much as long as you change the oil and filter and keep up on other maintenance.

It is not overthinking it to consider using non-synthetic.
