Knowledge is power? I'm aware it's expensive, I understand that I had to do a lot off preventative maintenance given it's age, and I think it's totally worth it. It's in tip top shape now, and should remain that way for a good while given how little it gets driven.

Feel like I'm at a fork in the road. Thinking about doing the major preventative maintenance stuff. But I also have been looking at other vehicles thinking that it might make more sense to get a simple daily driver that can cheaply and easily get me from point A to B while parking the LR4 to keep in reserve for situations that would call for its capacities. I've also been looking at other LR4s and will occasionally come across a pretty nice one that is relatively cheap, under $10,000. If the preventative maintenance costs nearly $10,000 and you add that to the purchase price of the vehicle, $14,000, then you are at $24,000 for a used vehicle you could get for $10,000. Seems like there is something wrong with that math.

I can tell you what's wrong with that math: the hypothetical.

The sub $10k LR4 is sub-$10k because it needs a lot of maintenance. Anyone who's done the work is stating it in their listing and asking for more money.

How about some positive news? In 2023 I spent a grand total of $195 Canadian on the 2010 LR4 upkeep. That's like $145 US.

$115 ($85 US) for front &rear diff fluid and transfer case fluid.
$80 ($59 US) for a Wix XP filter and Mobil1 5W-20 EP high mileage.

In my case, it doesn't matter. I'm keeping it because I really like it, not because it makes the most sense financially. I'm willing to dump some money into it so I can drive it with confidence over the next several years. Hopefully, that will make it an enjoyable experience rather than a stressful one.

I do have a number and it's not inconsequential, but if I hit it and there's still a problem then I'm tapping out.

Like a lot of things in life, it all depends on how it turns out.

Get this, I know of an instance where he tapped out by abandoning his vehicle at the shop.
Apparently he destroyed his 3rd engine!!
How do you do that, you ask?
1. on the first engine, ignore the timing chain rattle
2. on the second engine, never change or check the level of the oil… be sure to run it dry.
3. and on the 3rd, when the engine is running hot and the temp and check engine light are on…. wait for it…. try to drive it 250km to your preferred garage. (yes, no coolant).

I like the positive news idea.
We got our 2nd LR4 in fall of 2020. A 2013 with 68k miles.
The only reason it has ever been to the dealer is to program a new key since my wife lost one fob (what a fiasco, the dealer not my wife).
Frequent home walmart mobil 1 Oil changes, a battery, lots of seafoam, and about $500 in parts to do the tranny pan and fluid swap and Sonnax zipkit is about all we've done to it.
Now sits at 108k and drives like new with two stupid exceptions: the clock spring whines sometimes and I get this weird idle fluctuation when it's hot and the AC is on (which I'm hoping the other thread will come up with ideas for.)
Been rock solid and our go to road trip vehicle (going skiing this weekend in her). Only downside is around town MPG like an 80's lamborghini.
