Engine Dies at 70 MPH

Just confirming... you are checking for fault codes with a GAP IID tool, correct? Or with a generic OBD-2 code reader?

No codes at all sounds odd. Wild guessing I'd wonder about the crank position sensor, which on some other makes (non-LR) can cause the engine to die after reaching full temp, and not restart until it cools down... then the symptoms repeat. I have no idea if the LR engine/sensors can suffer the same issue or not.

Thanks for all the thoughts. See if I can answer a few of the questions. First I stated the engine dropped to 10k RPM's that should be 1k RPM almost idol right before it died, at 70 mph. My bad. There were no check engine lights on, but later a dealer ran a complete test and saw many little things going on but nothing he though would cause the the engine to stop running. The dealer thinks I'm crazy but it happened.

I just checked the report the dealer ran. His report shows 11 modules with faults and 19 modules not responding. Most of it is very unimportant but there is one P0230-12 FUEL PUMP PRIMARY CIRCUIT FAILURE. Now the dealer said maybe the fuel pump got too hot and stopped working but he said he would wait and see if it does it again and bring it to him to run test to see if that shows up again. I hate problems that show up every now and then vs. just breaking so you can fix. I've now driven almost 2,000 miles and no failures whatsoever. I knew this was going to be a tough one. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. I'll let you know if it happens again to me.

At first I thought crank position sensor, too, but no joy on the starter makes me think something else.

I just had to replace the CPS on my 2004 MB E320. Died without warning. Let it sit for 30-45 minutes and she’d fire up and run for 3-4 minutes, then die again. Part was $42. Getting to it...holy crap! Flying blind and peeling skin to get it done...lol.

FYI: This code appears to be specifically a short to power on the fuel pump circuit. If you clear the code, does it return? Can you tell from the date set that this code correlates to your shut down event?

I would chime in with it being an electrical problem with either the alternator or battery. However I too had a complete failure similar to yours but I wasn't in motion at the time and it turned out to be a bad infotainment system. There are close to 20 modules that all run through that system that were designed by Ford on a fiber optic system.

Hey thanks for all the thoughts. Much appreciated. I'm not technical enough to tell you what the dealer was using but I only have a standard OBD-2 reader. The dealer reset everything I think and I haven't had it checked since. One more thing. I have really bad hearing and just maybe the Rover was actually trying to start and I just didn't hear it. I only tried it once. I'm in the computer business and have been since 1970. Programmer and such. This type failure we would simply call an act of God and pray it never comes back. I think that is where I'm at right now. Certainly not a common problem. Thanks again for all the feed back. I'm at 2,000 miles without any problems. If it happens again and I live through it, I'll take to dealer and see if he spots anything for sure. Thanks all.

Given it wouldn't crank until some time had passed, and then started fine, it's pretty much got to be electrical. As stated earlier, a faulty fuel pump wouldn't **** the engine dead and wouldn't stop it cranking as far as I know. I had a '99 Dodge Durango that would cut out in a very similar way, would not crank, and then restart fine some indeterminate time later. That was eventually fixed by replacing the engine ECU. It would get hot and quit. Of course it never happened to me, just when I loaned it out to relatives. It shut down a freeway interchange once when my sister-in-law was using it. She had her wheelchair bound husband in the car and the police had to close the ramps so he could be safely extracted from the vehicle. Of course, by the time they finished, the car started again. The Durango didn't show any relevant codes either since they would have been stored in the ECU but of course that was dead at the time.

Whaddya mean, you're barely on your 2nd oil change! (mileage-wise, hopefully you've changed it at least annually even if you don't drive it much).
