Wow, tough crowd. Being a newbie, he may not know what is even out there. My first question is how serious of off-roading are you planning, on a scale of 1-5 or 1-10?
I agree with Panzerknacker, get some experience on easy trails if you don't have any.
But Prior to that, recovery gear is a must. Then as you progress, my recommendation is body protection. Simply because better tires will get you into places that can get you into more trouble and if you want to keep your rig looking nice, protect it BEFORE you need that protection. If I had a dime for every time someone said "I wish I had protected____", I'd own more than just one LR3. I am one of those, but in another vehicle.
The first body protection mod you should look at is rock sliders. They protect your rocker panels below the doors. That area is quite vulnerable. You might think about a serious front bumper. I like the ARB. From there, keep an eye out for what others have and start researching.
