Hey everyone, I'm hoping that someone can give me a bit of perspective on what's going on with my LR3 before I take it to the local shop (or determine that it needs to go to the dealer).

I have an '05 LR3 V8 with 128K on it. Has run great so far...

About 3 weeks ago, I jumped in the vehicle and started it after it was sitting for about 2 hours and noticed what appeared to be a cloud of white smoke out my rear view mirror, which seemed odd, as I've never seen it before, but didn't smell anything when I stepped outside the vehicle.

Then about a week ago, it did it again, and it left a 'lingering' cloud (as if burning fluids) that smelled more like oil than the sweet smell of coolant. Vehicle was sitting overnight.

Today, after the vehicle sat 4 days at the airport, I had a similar cloud, smelled clearly like oil, but the 'cloud' of smoke wasn't as big as the last 2 times. Moreover, after driving about 15 min through city, I pulled away from the stop light and the vehicle seemed to just lag with the pedal 1/2 to the floor, and then I got an 'engine fault' and the vehicle wouldn't go over 30.

I parked for a few mins, restarted, and it was fine on the 2hr drive home. Checked the oil and put in a quart of 5w/30, as it was reading a bit low after sitting at the gas station for about 5 min on the way home. No smoke on startup at the gas station.

So, I'm wondering, based on the limited symptoms, is this something like rings/valves/etc (expensive) or something like yet another sensor or something that's leaking things into places it shouldn't be? Has anyone experienced this before?

Thanks for any guidance...

I had a Bonneville that did the same thing (oddly...at an airport) and it turned out to the upper intake. Not quite sure of the intake setup on LR3's, but I'd look into that first.

I know the sluggishness you were talking about is Land Rovers "limp mode" which it goes into to keep the truck from pretty much frying. When I was having thermostat issues, the truck would constantly do this to prevent it from over heating. It may be gasket issues in your engine. Too much to configure unless its taken apart. Good luck to you.

I should add this...you're burning coolant too I bet. So what ncburch said about gaskets is probably right. Stuff is mixing when it shouldn't...
