Thoughts on switching from 5w20 to 5w40 as miles approach 200K?

You burning oil?

For the last 140k kms I have been running Mobil1 EP 5w-20 with maybe 500mL of burn in the 8-10 km OCI. About 2 years ago I switched to the EP high mileage and all my weeps and seeps have gone away. Highly recommend.

Back to your question. I would lean towards a 30 weight first. If not perhaps Mobil 0W-40 which shears into a high 30s viscosity anyhow.

Can’t really tell. The electronic gauge fluctuates between 50 percent and 100%, even after adding a quart. Measured it 30 times in the past few days and it’s a coin flip.

I think the "gauge" readout? goes from full to 50% to add a quart (bottom) Did you ever get a message telling you to add a specific amount? Have you ever seen the overfilled warning? I would be tempted to add another 250 mL.

My rule of thumb is that anymore than 1L of make up oil is required between changes then it's starting to burn oil. I guess in the Rover's case it could be leak :O

I’m running 0w40 and have been for the last two changes. Just about 100k.

i only get an amount when i measure it with the hood open and pressing the cancel button 2x. i have seen overfill in the past but then it goes away. i just had an oil change so there is no way it burnt a quart.

Switching to a w40... no. w30... 'maybe' in a diesel. But that engine... I'm not doing it.

I still run 10w30 in a 1985 volvo marine diesel with LOTS of hours. And she purrs. I used w40 once and she ran a little off/rough. I changed it back after only a few running hours.

depends on the ultimate viscosity numbers. Many 30s and 40s are close.

What's your observations?
It’s totally fine. And it’s a better (the additive pack) and thicker oil with better timing chain protection. I’m running Castrol euro 0w40. It meets Porsche A40 and Mb 229.5, two tough specs. It’s ACEA a3/b4, which is a full SAPS standard made for high performance motors.

Any xw20 oil is made with fuel economy in mind. The JLR spec IIRC is ACEA C5, mid SAPS. ACEA C oils are made with protecting gas and diesel particulate filters and long catalytic converter life… so emissions focused.

I’m cool with the “drawbacks” of a performance car grade motor oil. The Porsche A40 test is something like 200 hours including measured G forces on the Nurburgring.
