Here's the story.

Wifey has a 2005 Nissan Murano for her DD. Great car. Great mpg, and has served us very well. Recently, the Murano required a bearing replacement. While waiting for the part to come in, the wifey drove the LR3. Now she wants it. :hmpf:

We both LOVE the room, comfort, drive-ability and styling. However, I would like to do some off-roading at some point.

The dilemma - Do I mod the LR3 with armor, etc and still let the wifey drive it? Orrr...do I let her have it and take the Murano to trade in on a new Jeep Rubicon Unlimited for a 'fun' ride?

Not sure I want to scratch up the LR3 off-roading, but I know it would be a hoot. Any thoughts from the trail gurus out there?

Bigs.

Ooo, tough one. While the LR3 is very capable off-road, it's limits are quickly realized when you get into the serious rock crawling. So that's my question, how serious are you going to be wheeling? Say on a trail rating system of 1-10, 10 being ********, what do you expect to do?

I'll add that while many people start out cruising the Forest Service roads, going thru the occasional mud-hole etc, they find themselves wanting more.

If you're ok with 3, maybe 4 rated trails, the LR3 will do that fairly well, but armor up. If you want more, welcome to the darkside and go for the jeep.

If you are leaning towards the jeep, I'd be happy to give you some pointers. You'd be much better off finding one that was smartly modified than buying a stock one and having it modified.

JD,

Thanks for the feedback. Part of the allure of the Jeep is the fact that I would be doing the modifying. I am a bit of a tool head, and I love working on my cars. In fact, I just did the bearing replacement on the Murano yesterday. That said, I don't mind buying a stock one and making it my own.

The LR3 - My original intention buying it was for a trail capable, weekend family excursion rig. One that would be perfect for backwoods camping or weekend trips to the beach. However, my mod bug is a big one and the LR3 is rather slim in the mod availability department.

Decisions, decisions..*sigh* :****:

I was looking online at the Jeep Rubicon today. Let her have the LR and get the Jeep. Heck if you ever get stuck she can come get you. If your not going ********* the LR is hard to beat even without the mods. The more mods I put on the LR the less the wife would drive it. So I have quite a few.

I completely understand wanting to do your own work. I do all mine if I can and there hasn't been much I haven't been able to do. And the good thing about that is you know the products you install, and you know how to fix them if something goes wrong!

My reasoning for buying one that has some of the mods you want to do is affordability. You can buy a modified rig for way cheaper than buying a stock one and modifying yourself. Consider how much lift you want and what size of tires, and search for a jeep that has just those mods. I recommend a long-arm setup. For instance:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Wrangler-WE-FINANACE-2006-Jeep-Wrangler-Unlimited-4-1-2-RUBICON-LIFT-34K-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem414ec45f70QQitemZ280494366576QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks

I do think you are smart looking at the Unlimited Rubicon. I wouldn't go with anything shorter and the Rubi has some great off-road stuff.

You say you have a family. What are you sacrificing by trading in the Nissan on a Rubi? Anything? Maybe a little creature comfort? On-road ability? These jeep suspensions are amazing. I have seen jeeps with 40" tires or better that are very streetable. Maybe not great for that 500+ mile trip, but you have the LR3 for that.

Not much. The LR3 would remain in stick form, whereas the Rubi would become the weekend trekking rig. Camping, trail riding, etc. The Unlimited gives me the capability to bring the family along with ease.

With all this said, I am waiting until the 2011 Rubi's are available with the new Pentastar motor. More power...

Plenty of time till then to decide on what mods to consider.

The Rubicon Unlimited is a nice choice!

Saw this little gem the other day: "I'd rather push my Land Rover than drive a Jeep!"

That's the big downfall of the new JK's, power. I wish they could have tweaked the ole 4.0L to work. It's a super stout motor with reasonable power.

Hmmm….I had my comments all thought out until I saw this last comment of yours. If you are just doing mild stuff in the LR3, there is no reason not to have it as a daily driver and family excursion vehicle. Get Cooper Zeon's or GY Duratrac tires and some under armor and a cargo barrier inside, and maybe a roof top cargo carrier or better yet a removable roof rack, and you have the best of both worlds. A supremely comfortable daily driver and a GREAT off road vehicle.

Here is my previously tapped out response:

Okay, I have gone down this same rabbit hole. I have/had the following vehicles nearly concurrently:
1 Nissan Armada 4x4
2. LR3 4x4
3. Volvo XC70 AWD
4. Jeep Rubicon Unlimited (2 door LJ), lifted, on 35's.

Nothing beats the Armada on the road for comfortable cross country touring…on pavement. 11mpg does suck though :)

My LR3 was the family exploration vehicle. If the 4 of us were going, we took the LR3. It's extremely capable, quite comfortable, and holds a lot of gear. We did several 10 day or longer excursions in excess of 2,000 miles each, with all we needed on board. It was a tight fit, but it worked okay.

Economy tanked, had to sell the LR3, leaving us with the Jeep. I can and do take the Jeep places the LR3 could not do, but if it's more than an hour or two away, it is not fun getting there, and if it's an overnight trip, it is extremely difficult to fit it all in the Jeep…and 8mpg really sucks, especially with the tiny gas tank. I have less than 150 mile range on windy days or hilly areas.

What I really need is an offroad trailer to hold my gear, but even with one, driving the Jeep long distances is no fun, especially with the soft top on. The concussions of the soft top billowing in the wind on the highway deafens you, and upsets your inner ear and makes you nausicious and dizzy on long drives. It's not too bad with the hard top, but then, you sacrifice one of the best parts of owning a Jeep…******* on the trail!

So my family recently went through the lineup of vehicles ranked by capability, cost, capacity, and comfort. The winner: 1998-1999 Toyota Land Cruiser 100 series (or Lexus LX470 - same rig). More room than the LR3, half the price, has a rear locker and center diff lock, terrific durability, and bumpers and lifts are available (www.sleeoffroad.com). You can roll on 35's with a 2.5" lift if you want to go big.

But, the wife loves Jeep's, and loves going ******* :)

So, instead of a Cruiser, we will probably save up for a mildly mod'd JK with the removable Freedom top, AND a trailer. With this combo, we'll have our long distance overland vehicle and rock crawler. I'll stick to the Volvo as a DD, and the Armada for "Lap around America" style paved road trips….unless my career resurrects itself and I can get another LR3. I still miss it every single day. I hate driving the Volvo in comparison.

This is a huge factor with my situation as well. It is a simple fact...

...The wifey loves Jeeps and taking the top off.

Seriously though, I like the extreme off-roading capability of Rubi Unlimited while also offering to hit those trails with the fam tagging along. That said my plan involves also building a "teardrop" style trailer similar to this one:

sm-00705.jpg

The thread to see this very slick build see here:

http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18142&highlight=teardrop+build

I am the handy type. I love to mod and build stuff. I miss my race car. I built that car from the ground up. It was a blast and real fun on the race track. I miss working on something. The reality of the LR3 - very limited mods. Sure, you can simply bolt on a rack here or a tire carrier there, but the drivetrain is VERY limited in what can be expanded on. That said, I need to tinker on something.

Sooo...the Rubi looks like fun to me. At least...at this moment.

I appreciate the feedback thus far. :hello:
