Hello from Texas, I have a 1997 Discovery SE, 4.0 with 168,000 miles.
Recently, I tried to get a state inspection but failed because of a "Not Ready" condition on the 02 sensors, heaters and Cat. Anybody know the procedure to get the ECU reset? I understand that if you disconnect the battery this is the result until the ECU gets back to normal.
This is the first time I have ever heard of this.

My understanding is that if a component (sensor) is outside the parameters of "normal"

the ECU will throw a code after 2-3 startups.

If this event happens only once, then the ECU is watching for a repeat.

in the case of o2 sensors, the first (b/4 cat) set the emissions & the second (after cat)
looks for a reduction of the first (cat's working)

I'd buy the $50 obd2 reader so you can clear the codes (write the #'s down first)

You didn't mention which sensor, so it's hard to guess (I think the O2's last about 80k mi)

you might be ready for a new set.

the cats last around 10 yrs. average, I believe

luck,greg

Thanks, the ECU isn't throwing a code, it just reports "not ready". In Texas 2 or more not ready means fail. I have new o2's to install but need to know how to reset the not ready. The inspector just said to drive it 150 miles or so.

I was told by the Illinois emission testing person that if you cleared codes or installed new O2 sensors that you had to drive the vehicle for a couple of days in different conditions before the test so that the onboard ECU would have data for the tester to read.

exactly, I apologize for not including - after several startups, a period of driving no faults,

the ECU settles down, hopefully, everything is good.

What are the exact fault code numbers, if you don't have them go to a local parts store, most will read them for free.
