Normal for new brakes to squeak?

You need to take your truck back to the mechanic and have him correct this probably by either installing good ceramic pads like Okebonno's and or using sound deadening spray on the back of the pads. You also should have had the brakes bled, usually 3 to 4 pints of DOT 4, that will correct the soft pedal.
Also OME doesn't mean they were made specifically for Rover and installed at the factory, just means it is the correct size and supposed to be compariable to actual factory pads.

Well they claimed they bled the brakes but it sure does not feel like it. I need to confirm this again and ensure they added the DOT 4 too. As for ceramics, it seems like the life is much shorter than metal. I've averaged 25k miles per set in the past- what is the typical life expectancy for ceramic brake pads- mix of city and more highway use. do you need to start clean with new rotors or are there special rotors to go with the pads- and is there more brake dust for either front or rear?

Perhaps next time i should buy the ceramic brakes and then just pay for labor. I would certainly do the work myself but my timing is very limited. thanks for the direction.

If your brakes feel bad and they did the work on them, then get back to the. Have you looked at the color of your brake fluid, is it crystal clear in the reservor, if not they need to do it again.
Pads are like anything else, there are good ones and bad, ceramic is no different, throw on some cheap ones and you get what you pay for same as the pads they installed on your truck, they are most likely cheap OEM pads that make lots of dust and don't last long.

the only time I felt my brakes mushy was after I installed new pads and was coming down a pretty steep hill. I stepped on the brake and it felt like I had pushed it further than normal. This eventually lead to a vibration on the highway that was caused by the EPB not fully disengaging from the hub. I had the car pulled over and called for road service. The guy who came said that the pad felt mushy because it was overheating as I came down the hill. The vibrating wheel thing was a separate issue..

Bad Textar Brakes '07 LR3

At 32K miles, the dealership recommended a full brake change with new pads and rotors. The dealership quote was $1200 for new pads and rotors. I shopped around and bought a brake rebuild kit from Atlantic Britsh at $367. The kit came with Textar brake pads and rotors that were "OE quality." The day after the brakes were installed by an indy service tech, the squeaks and squeals began at all corners. The brakes faded also and the pedal felt different. AB agreed to take back the Textar pads, so I purchased the LR pads. Just had the LR OEM pads installed today. The technician said the LR OEM brake pads were noticeably a better quality brake. So far no squeaks and squeals. The experience cost me an extra $200 in parts and labor... so beware of buying Textar!

wynmac, are you cool with the "OEM" rotors or would you have gone with the full LR replacement if you had to do it over again?

BTW, I spoke with AB a couple weeks ago and they recommended not going with the Textstar pads due to some negative feedback they had been getting. That was an attractive price though. I am considering the non-LR rotors with the LR Pads.

BldrRover, you should ask me in about a week! Right now I have on LR pads and the non-LR rotors that came with the rebuild kit. The AB rep I spoke with told me that there had been no complaints with the non-LR standard rotors; so, I kept the standard non-LR rotors and just swapped out the pads. Now, it's only been the first day, but I expect the standard non-LR rotors will be fine. Still, after dealing with the Textar brand pads, I wary of trying anything that's not Land Rover.

One week and 600 miles later-- The LR brake pads with standard rotors are going great. No squeaks and even braking.

Wish I had bought the Textar package; forgot last month during the sale, and the "change brake pads" warning came on along with the rather insistent chime every time coming to a stop. Had to do a 1000 mile road trip with the family this weekend, so I changed the discs/pads/sensor on all 4 (2 for sensors) corners - Wednesday night for the rears and Thursday over lunch for the fronts. The pricing on everything in Canada is terrible, and I didn't have time to grab the Textars from AB, so I hit up a local "PartSource" which could overnight me some Brembos and PBR pads (for which I had to bend over and lube up - but still $700 cheaper then the local LR stealership). The job took way longer then I had anticipated - I simply could not get 3 over the 4 rims off of the hubs for the longest time. Once the rims were off, the actual brake job was pretty quick - there are a couple of decent DIY tutorials floating around, and save for cursing the attachment points of the sensors, it was pretty straightforward; the double piston calipers up front were a new experience, but no different in effort...
