The upcoming new Sport will have a BMW-ish joystick as shifter, no more rotary dial. My guess is that Land Rover will get rid of the rotary dial thingie soon enough, hopefully across the board. They must have realized it looks cool in a Jaguar, not so much in a supposedly rugged SUV.

So i was driving my wife's Evoque (rotary shifter and buttons for traction control) and after I was done playing in the mud, instinctively i reached for the rotor and spun it to what I thought was normal driving terrain. Imagine my shock when i put the car into park at 40mph.....

Cudo's to the car for not seizing the tranny and just yelling at me while in neutral.

It definitely will take some getting used to in dealing with the rotary shifter.

Kaaae,

That cracked me up!!! ;)

I would have thought there's some kind of safety feature that prevents the transmission from selecting park while driving...

Glad to read nothing broke and you're fine.

Umberto,

I do agree that the rotary dial is no really rugged looking.
I wonder if they picked the joystick style for the new RRS because it looks more sporty and offers the ability to shift without having to use the paddle shifters which some people still prefer.
That being said the Evoque is pretty sporty and comes with rotary shifter.
I'm happy with the big old shifter in the LR4 for now. This one is really rugged ;))

David,

I did a quick search on this as I was pretty sure that when LR mated the TDV6 to the 8 speed they introduced the rotary shifter and here are a couple links showing the LR4/ Disco4 with the rotary shift knob and paddle shifters:

To be honest with you, all of the European vehicles imported to the US are always one or two years (sometimes more) behind the European version (LR, BMW, VW...)

I do not mind the rotary shifter as you get to shift the gears with the paddles if need be and in some extreme situations it might be better to have both hands on the steering wheel.

I believe the article points out that the reveal will take place in September so only a couple more months to wait... who knows maybe the body design will actually be slightly different...

Axel

The Discovery 4s being sold here in Panama have the rotary shifter and paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The stick shifter (which I prefer) is not an option.

I was very happy to learn that our 2013 LR4 will come with a stick shifter

There is. It will stay in Neutral and not allow you to go all the way to Reverse or Parking.

I prefer the 2013 shifter, but I won't cry a river if I get the knob. I just hope they still offer the black pkg and some kind o flight-ish gray like Orkney. It took me awhile to settle on that color!

Thanks, Axel... I've seen a couple of those photos below. I can see the benefits of having the shifters on the wheel, but honestly, they would just be in the way (for me at least). I don't hate the look of the knob shifter, but I much prefer the current design. I also like the terrain response MUCH Better with the knob - much easier to turn quickly - even with gloves on! I don't like having to push the left and right toggle buttons. I can see why Land Rover would go to this design, but I just don't like it and I don't think it's practical for those of us who take the vehicle off road. I am way too old fashioned.

Oh yes, the new RRS doesn't have that shifter - I forgot about that.

I totally agree, it looks pretty sharp in the Jaguar, but not in a Land Rover.

Let's just hope they don't screw with (near) perfection with new tranny and engines on a platform that's finally become very reliable. Honestly, has anyone ever seen a Land Rover product placing in the top 5 of any reliability studies before?

Wow - that is definitely an accomplishment and certainly makes me happy that I went with the 2013. I love the engine and hopefully most of the kinks are worked out from previous years (though there did not appear to be too many at all - considering LR's past). I also hope that any new platforms won't ruin the reliability, etc.

Thanks for sharing!
