I added the antifreeze to the "Cold Fill Range" and drove it down the road and noticed the engine temp gauge was at red. I pulled back into the garage and the antifreeze tank was filled to the brim. What is causing this and should I just drain the coolant out and fill it back up, but with LESS fluid? I'm assuming that I may have added too much antifreeze before allowing it all to run through the hoses, etc..

Was it supposed to be cut with water? I wouldn't think over filling it would cause over heating. Didn't u just change your thermostat? Was it operating Normally prior to this?

Yes it was opening normally before this. I'm using Dex-Cool 50/50. I'm not sure why this is happening. I'm about to open the t-stat housing as we speak and make sure the t-stat isn't bad.

Found the problem. The thermostat was fine, but noticed the little grooves the t-stat slides into inside of the housing, one of the plastic grooves completely broke off of the housing. I guess I'll have to order a new housing. Joy.

You may have just had an air bubble that needed to be worked out. Did it happen quickly after leaving? Air expands quite a bit more when it gets hot and may have pushed the fluid into the reservoir.

It's part of owning a LR I suppose. I really don't want to order a whole new housing, I just need to part that unscrews with the T25 hex screws. The t-stat has two medal sides that slide into place within the plastic on the housing. I guess the plastic had become weak and essentially broke.

Geez, I hope that is all it is...mine was blown head gaskets...over $5k to fix...they found the radiator had about 50% blockage. Don't know how that happened as I have always changed and flushed coolant as recommended.

Ouch! My local Land Rover dealership is 6 miles from my house so I took my chances on driving there this morning without a thermostat. I added water in hopes that it would keep the engine cool for the 10 minute drive. I literally made it to the entrance of the dealership before seeing a smokey substance come from under the hood. I pushed it to the service department from there. I opened the hood when I got there and noticed it was smoking from around the thermostat housing. I'm in high hopes that the issue with with that alone and not an engine problem. The fault code was originally for the bad t-stat. After going to replace it myself I noticed the housing was broken. It all started from there.

Thanks all for your help. I mentioned these potential problems to the master tech at Bluff City Land Rover here in Memphis. I escaped a MAJOR problem. He said if I had driven the truck for little more I could have blown gaskets of all sorts. A chemical test was ran on the engine and the oil was almost at boiling point. All in all it cost $385.03. New housing, t-stat gasket, t-stat, coolant, one of the hoses had been damaged(melted), and the bleeder valve was completely shredded. The bleeder valve was much of the issue. Everything is running good now. I brought it in this morning at 9:30 and it was done by 5pm. No complaints.
