Buying a press to do my own wheel bearings....need advice on what else I need

So I am getting a press so that I can do my own wheel bearings and ball joints etc. I want to learn how and I also off road pretty hard so I imagine I will be replacing them a lot.

I have tried searching to see what bearing race sizes and stuff I would need and I thought I read on a forum post that the harbor freight kit does not include the correct size...but I cannot seem to find that post now.

Is something like this all I need to do my rear wheel bearings?


I am having trouble finding information online, all of the videos I watched just show them using the press and didn't really explain exactly what they were using.

Or maybe I should go with something like a OTC Hub Grappler so I don't have to take the entire thing apart. Downside on that is I wouldn't really be able to use it for anything else.

Wheel bearings are sealed units.
You won't need the race driver set.
Front wheel bearings are bolted in. Rears are pressed in.

That set has a decent assortment of plates, but I can't find a size for the bearing either. Hopefully you saw this vid
he does a pretty good job explaining the process, that threaded rod method is what we used in the old days. And sometimes a mallet...

I did my rear bearings not too long ago. They are pressed in and the OEM is Timken. I used this kit:

Once out, I used the old bearing race to press in the new one with the threaded rod method. Its a difficult job, a press would have been much quicker and easier. I would tighten the threaded rod down as hard as I could with an impact drill, then whack at it with a 4lb impact hammer. It took 20 or so cycles of this.

I really recommend a high power electric impact driver for all the suspension bolts. I got the Ryobi one that is rated at 1100 ft lbs and it is a beast. It will knock loose the axle nut in seconds.

Thank you all for the replies. I had seen that video but I missed the part where he said that he had to make that tool because he didn't have a correct size sleeve.

Between that video and what Kels83 said, I think I have a good idea of what to do. I am going to order that same kit and give it a go.

I will still end up getting a press but this lets me start the job sooner.
