    Towing with 2017 Discovery

Considering that Land Rover is now defeaturing products with product entry points of standard coil sprung suspensions I would think the answer is based on coil vs active-air. Wouldn't the basic LR now need a WDH while active-air would not? As for 7mpg towing a trailer, another deal breaker...

I have had a loaner D5 for a week Ask Me Anything (LR4 owner)

The Land Rover direction under McGovern feels like the convergence of Jaguar and Land Rover into a single product line. A CUV/SUV/Car direction is highlighted by the dealer saying "Land Rover is no longer that company". Interestingly the recently revealed Ford strategy might make an end around...

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

The Discovery 5 fits within the design language of the Evoque/Velar. Look at Land Rover, BMW, etc and you will see a common theme across all models - the "design language". Sometimes the result is a unique and easily recognized image. Other times not so much. The Discovery 5 is in the...

LR4 vs LC - After 18 Months w/ The LC

Hello Dan, good your getting out and using your truck. I've never had a Toyota product and the minor interaction with the appliance dealers was not so good. British Car Club guy has relatively new Tundra that spent 3 to 4 months at the dealer for apparently a Toyota rear end recall, waiting for...

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

Agree with umbertob. To not mention the Discovery 5 after a year of sales is very telling. As far as the increase in Range Rover sales I'm somewhat not surprised. Years ago when looking for my 95RRC LWB it became obvious where RR sales were located. That was NJ, FL and TX. Forget looking in CO...

Disco 5 hit with the ugly stick

Or you can think back to Triumph Motor Cars who moved away from the classic design of the TR6, to the "Shape Of Things To Come" TR7. While Triumph sold many TR7's they lost their base and after initial sales they are now gone. Yes there were many other contributors to their demise but watering...

    Saying goodbye to an albatross

Agreed Ryan. Those luxury design point decisions are now present with all manufacturers. Brother-in-law just bought a low end GMC pickup. Looked for the most defeatured truck available. Commented that everything is now dressed up, at much higher prices.

    Sway control for a 16ft travel trailer 2012 LR4

Still happy with the Rhino hitch. Replaces "The Plow", doesn't require storage if off-road and allows me to store a 285/60-18 tire under the rear without depressurization. The LR wedge hitch extended too far into the spare tire storage area, interfering with oversize tires.

    Sway control for a 16ft travel trailer 2012 LR4

    - There really is no difference between a D3 and D4. - Agreed that there is some liability considerations relative to LR and testing but they do have caravans in the UK. - I consider both wedges to be plows. There was an earlier longer one and a later shorter one. Both plows This is a good...

    Sway control for a 16ft travel trailer 2012 LR4

Not wanting to open a can of worms but going to anyway ...... WDH and air suspension LR's always opens that can. WDH/anti-sway technology was developed for coil sprung vehicles with no suspension ECU's LR3/LR4's have active/air suspension with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Apples and...

    Saying goodbye to an albatross

My sons a mechanic and many vehicles he works on are deferred maintenance issues or simply high mileage. There are some makes that are better than others but generally people are shocked that per visit cost are now over $1000 and they still have items remaining on the pre-work inspection list...

    2-Speed Transfer Case 2016 LR4

Agreed. Not seeing the pluses of a D5 SVX over the 2010-2013 LR4 with 5.0L V8 and HD driveline. It's as if they up-marketed/priced the V8/HD LR4 to $90K and inserted a defeatured low end LR4 as a new LR5.

Pricing Differences for 2013 vs earlier (big changes?)

2013 was the last year of the 5.0L V8, 6-speed and dual speed transfer case. Buyer beware after 2013. Some would say 2013 was the best year for the LR4 if HD is fitted.

Traction/Stability control on snow and ice?

The biggest variable is the driver and their judgement, or lack thereof. If your on snow and ice and can't 'hear' the road, your on black ice. I doubt any system can overcome the laws of physics. Second, tires. Factory tires suck in snow/ice. But they do provide high mpg for that brick you are...

My LR4 next to a new Discovery...

Ford acquired Jaguar in 1989. In 2000, Rover Group (includes Mini) was broken up by BMW and LR was sold to Ford. Ford reunited Jaguar and Land Rover as the Premier Auto Group. In 2008, Ford sold JLR to Tata Motors. Gerry McGovern, design director, worked for Ford from 1999 to 2003, joining Land...

So now a 5.0L V8 with Ford Explorer styling will cost $90K?

My LR4 next to a new Discovery...

Loading / carrying a canoe looks problematic or at least cumbersome with the D5. My LR4 with low profile roof rack works very well for this role/task. The D5's butt is really ugly. Also don't like the loss of rear/side visibility. I sense a D6 is already on the drawing board.

    LR5 Release Updates?

Just returned from the dealer for service on my LR4. Some thoughts/observations. - There are NO LR4's on the lot. They would like a few but they are all sold and/or not being traded in. - Lots of Evoque's and Discovery Sports. That's good and bad. - The Discovery 5 is not selling well. A few...

    Battery Life

First, thanks for a great post. One of the better ones on LR4 charging systems. Which brings up the issue of RV/camper (house) batteries. I would think most keep their camper batteries charged to optimal levels while at home and then connect the "house" battery to the engine battery (charging...

    Hello all.

Brake controller is your standard Ford connector. Tow package harness is easy to install. Tow hitch insert pops up on craigslist from time to time for $300 range

    Battery Life

My 2011 is on its 3rd battery. The first was replaced by the dealer when I purchased it in 2013. The 3rd was a few months ago when I started to notice slightly less torque starting the truck, followed by a dead truck a week or two later. The 2nd battery, Interstate, last basically a few months...

    ground clearance

A perspective from a long time 4WD owner/camper/etc. I don't have armor and never have. From Jeep pickups to Scouts to D1's to D4's. From gulches to 12/13K foot altitude passes. Slow down and learn to "pick the line". Get out of the truck and walk the trail if you can't find that line or the...

    ground clearance

Honestly I think tires should be the #1 modification. The LR4 is a heavy truck. Stock tires are meant for urban travel. The new tires should be load range E minimum.

    LR5 Release Updates?

Sitting in bar. Friend who is looking for a replacement vehicle described the D5 as a "Fat lady who is hiking up her rear end skirt" Ouch!
